A very wise man.

No war was worth the loss of a couple of lives, let alone thousands, for what was nothing but "a family row".

It was the loss of his three friends on the night of September 22 almost 90 years ago that haunted him. "Those chaps are always with me. I can see that damned explosion now," he would say.

I am glad Gerrard got off today. Too many people nowadays throw a paddy and go crying to the police/courts when they start trouble and people stand up for themselves. One of the best footballers in the world at present and he's 29.

Beeksy - done some research on Henry. A great man indeed and seems he was with the naval air force in East Africa where there was some action. Also involved in Jutland and the Western Front. Seems in the later years of his life he was persuaded to talk about his experiences and went to talk at schools etc.

I know we have discussed this old gent before. I think he had an interesting WW1 career and was stationed in East Africa at one stage in the war assigned to the navy or air force. Also involved in the Battle of Jutland.

I might be getting confused with one of the other surviving or recently deceased veterans regarding East Africa but will check it out and will post something on the history thread. Just imagine the times he lived through.

What a lovely old bloke he was.

Anyone who fights in WWI and puts his longevity down to cigarettes, whisky and wild women is a hero in my book.

Bearing in mind we only get a say in our democracy every 4 years, what's so democratic about it? 2 million marched against the war- many more felt strongly about it- similar with the Lisbon treaty- where's the referendums?

Our democracy tends to only ask the questions where it doesn't matter what the answer is- general elections being a prime example- there's hardly anything to choose between the self interested fatheads these days.

We should shake up our own democracy and repeal the Parliament Act (1911)- Before that the government was required to go to the country far more often than it needs to now. Then perhaps we might have something worth exporting.

rutter,

We can play about with statistics and argue risk. Did you know for example there are more deaths and injuries in the building trade than any other industry?

Ratty. It's been the worst week for British troops in Afghanistan since we invaded.....and having said that, I must again admit that we are the aggressors.

I do wish we hadn't got ourselves into these Iraq and Afghani conflicts...but confess as to not knowing what is right and wrong here.

Here are a couple of points....but admit that they are only opinions which can often change like the direction of the wind in my case.....and am happy to be politely shot down.

1) Why are we IN Afghanistan?

2) Are we there to prevent Afghanistani women being brutilised? A just cause, but I fear not the reason.

3) Prevent the poppy/drugs trade? Surely not. Why not just legalise drugs.

4) My main point is this. In order to fight the might of UK/American and many other forces one needs weaponry and CASH.....serious CASH. So my main question is who is funding the Taliban?....Certainly not Afghanistan. That's who we should be waging war against....if anyone.

Another "lie" I heard on TV today...for every UK soldier killed, about 100 enemy are killed........and I'm not too sure about Air Marshall Jock Stirrup's quote today that there is a DIRECT link from Afghanistan to UK's terrorism.

Bit disjointed my posts I realise....but just angry at the loss of young lives lost.
