Randgold Resources, down 2.3%. On Monday, Randgold agreed a USD18.30 billion merger with Canadian peer Barrick Gold, closing up 5.2%. The merger is expected to complete by the end of the first quarter of 2019 and will see Randgold leave the London Stock Exchange. The gold miner was downgraded to Neutral from Overweight by JPMorgan. However, Royal Bank of Canada raised the stock to Sector Perform from Underperform.

Gold Is Cheap. Inflation Is Coming. You Do the Math

Compared with stocks and other financial assets, gold looks inexpensive. More important, inflation is starting to pick up in the U.S. and in much of the world as central banks shrink their enormous balance sheets. And gold has represented a good defense against inflation eroding the value of a stock or bond portfolio. Over time, it has held its value against the dollar. Gold was $20.67 an ounce 100 years ago and that bought a good men’s suit. At $1,200 an ounce, the same is true today.

“Gold is rare, and it’s hard to rapidly increase the supply of it,” says Keith Trauner, co-portfolio manager of the GoodHaven (ticker: GOODX) mutual fund, which holds Barrick Gold(ABX), a leading mining company. “People have historically viewed it as a hedge against government depreciation of local currency.”

There are an estimated six billion ounces of gold in the world, worth more than $7 trillion, about 30% of the value of the S&P 500. Annual new mined supply adds less than 2% to the global total.

“Virtually every government in the world is trying to promote inflation partly because there is so much sovereign debt,” Trauner says. When there is so much debt, he contends, governments have three choices: default, restructure, or inflate the currency. “Politicians, when given the chance, will choose the latter.”

Naysayers point to higher interest rates as a negative for gold because it increases the allure of holding cash. But gold had one of its best decades during the inflationary 1970s, when rates soared.

Eoin Treacy's view
Whereto for precious metals? A big decline has taken gold back to the $1200 level from it’s January peak of $1366 and sentiment is torn between those hungry for bargains and those worried about the trajectory of interest rates and the strength of the Dollar.

Whilst I think this had some way to go I bailed out in its entirety today. 8% return for 6 weeks is too good to turn down. It was 95% of my portfolio so huge risk so I chickened out. Good luck all.

I bought RRS for it's cash flow and rising dividend yield... I won't get that with Barrick..they'll have to go a lot higher to get my vote.

anyone know when the date for the transaction to be completed is? Holder and hoping for the share price of Barrick rises so will RRS and a turn up in gold would help the price move up.

This is a sell out for the private investor. Why on earth would the share price advance. The only person to be happy is Mark Bristow.

Hi EssentialInvestor,
Yes, got a bit lucky with the deal being announced. However, I hope the recovery in Gold (when it happens) will boost RRS/Barrick a lot further. Would like to close out around £60 and move on but that is a big gap still.
Might go back to Shire as think there is still 10% up for grabs. Will wait for closer to the shareholder vote dates to avoid market volatility in the meantime.

What they will go up to totally depends on the gold price. If the price of gold goes up 20-25% we should see them double. Look back at the charts and that is the lesson from history.

A rise in the gold price of 25% or more is highly likely in the next 6-12 months if we see a correction in the US equity markets which is expected and overdue.

What will these go up to if this deal goes through

Thinking about it, I suppose the two independently trading shares reflect the probability of the deal going through and the likely impact on the combined group.

If each Randgold shares is worth a fixed 6.128 Barrick shares, then why are they up differing percentages today.

Can anyone explain what I am missing.

I suspect the larger increase in Randgold shares suggests that the deal may not go through and a second bidder will emerge. I don't know.

Any thoughts why the two prices are not moving exactly the same if they are joined at the hip.

@Chris

Check with your ISA provider - some allow foreign shares
Eg TD Direct (II or whatever they call themselves - They;re Canadian so you can hold Canadian stocks in your ISA,and Aussie)

Pretty sure ABX will be allowed for most providers. But double check

The regulations say you can hold foreign stocks listed on a “recognised stock exchange” in an Isa. ... However, the fact that an investment would be permitted under HMRC rules doesn't mean every Isa provider will allow you to hold it. Most brokers only trade a limited selection of international markets.

Foreign shares in an ISA
by The Investor on August 25, 2011
You can hold US shares in an ISA, and other foreign shares, too.

Many investors seem to be confused about whether you can hold foreign shares in ISAs.

The answer is simple: You can!

According to HMRC, you can hold foreign shares in an ISA as long as the shares are in a company listed on “a recognised stock exchange anywhere in the world”.
