A nice little purchase of a gardening publisher. No amounts disclosed but i suspect it's a great deal for us.

These are great results:
1) cash generated and paying off debt £4.5m + dividend
2) real growth particularly in BRIC countries
3) Intellectual property as good as any inflation proof asset/commodity
4) Company using new technology and taking opportunities

After a quick look at the accounts I can't see why John Lee invests in this company. I have only had a quick look at the latest accounts and recoiled in horror. Quarto was started in 1976 and quoted in 1986. The balance sheet shows equity of £18.5m, borrowings of £74m and £56m of goodwill, including expenditure on titles yet to be published. The turnover is only £107m and return on capital is poor. It seems to me that the company has raised money from shareholders and bankers to buy assets of doubtful value whilst returning some of the money as dividends and interest. What happens if the music stops?

Mr John Lee a very conservative investor in the FT doing his bit. Dividend covered 3 times, Low P/E etc.
However having just noticed the share , I see it has just gone Ex-Div. Making a diary entry to look again next spring.

Unfortunately very little if any. The ft column has been a fan for a while now but has little effect on shareprice.

Hi battlebus, I've not held them for that long. I got them just before the last results in that nice dip, basically got them for the dividend also, 4p next week. Nice statement today and like you say someday......
