09/2/2018 12:53 | It is possible. | bobmonkeyhouse
09/2/2018 12:50 | No, not possible. Not through a broker who expects to keep their licence anyway | cc2014
09/2/2018 07:50 | It is possible to short without borrow, not strictly by the rules though | bobmonkeyhouse
09/2/2018 05:57 | If you have a few big investors and a small free float, that can lead to a lot of price distortion in a bull market with a high growth stock. Shorting is helpful in this situation as it levels the playing field. Until said big players take their shares back at least. rog Woodford is fixing this one but he can't control it indefinitely. Don't let this become another Slater and Gordon for you rog. | ltcm1
08/2/2018 15:56 | At leas IG etc will not be able to say someone wants their stock back and close your position if you stick to taking a "position" be it long or short on the FTSE. There being a lower risk "investment" bob. :-) | clocktower
08/2/2018 15:34 | LOL. I wondered if someone might pick up on that! Being long is a gamble, short is an investment because I'm always right :) | bobmonkeyhouse
08/2/2018 15:28 | So Andy and bob, Do you agree that they(long and short positions)are both Gambles - being "a risky action undertaken with the hope of success". | clocktower
08/2/2018 09:37 | Zho, That sort of article doesn't surprise me, in fact I expect to see many more similar stories, and not limited to PB either. When someone takes an upfront payment they have less incentive to do further work, the focus will be on the next commission rather than achievement of a sale, IMO. | andy
08/2/2018 09:33 | bob, Yes on that we do agree. | andy
08/2/2018 09:29 | Fair enough Andy I was interested in your point of view, as there are those that do not recognize short trades as an investment, yet longs and shorts both have the same objective....profit. | bobmonkeyhouse
08/2/2018 09:12 | bob, Ok not an investment in the underlying security. | andy
08/2/2018 08:08 | Definition of investment in|vest|ment [ɪnˈvɛ NOUN the action or process of investing money for profit: "a debate over private investment in road-building" · [More] synonyms: investing · speculation · expenditure · outlay · funding · backing · [More] a thing that is worth buying because it may be profitable or useful in the future: "freezers really are a good investment for the elderly" synonyms: venture · speculation · risk · gamble · asset · buy · acquisition · [More] an act of devoting time, effort, or energy to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result: "the time spent in attending the seminar is an investment in our professional futures" synonyms: sacrifice · surrender · foregoing · loss · relinquishment · forfeiture | bobmonkeyhouse
08/2/2018 08:02 | Why is a short not an investment? I think it is, you are investing your money with a view to make money, just buying and selling in a different order | bobmonkeyhouse
08/2/2018 00:15 | Rog, A short is certainly not investment! But they're allowed! | andy
07/2/2018 21:55 | sensible lender wanting his PURP's back out of the hands of the cynical international shorting conspiracy who only care about the quick buck not investment | rogthepodge
07/2/2018 20:31 | likewise for me and IG it would seem like NW is calling the shots, in innocence maybe the lender wants the shares back so they can sell them? either way it is horrible to have such manipulation but it does so they can in the terms - i just didn't think they ever would..... so any short position i have they can close out with no notice!! why would i take the risk of any short again?? how IG prioritise who to call first? i got no explanation as to why other than lender wants their shares back it all adds to the smoke and mirrors of PURP | thirty fifty twenty
07/2/2018 17:55 | itcm1, That'w why IG wouldn't let me back in then! And yes I think they can do it, but it;s not ethical, IMO | andy
07/2/2018 16:35 | Guys does it say anywhere in the terms and conditions that they can do this??? It seems like a charta for closing out winning positions. | ltcm1
07/2/2018 16:33 | is woodford lending and them withdrawing them to support share price? | bobmonkeyhouse
07/2/2018 16:20 | whole system appears to be a bit messed imho | ntv
07/2/2018 14:47 | NTV - Spreadex closed my short position out yesterday also | msc74idc
07/2/2018 10:23 | How can that be legal? You are contracting with CI not the lender of the stock, surely it is up to CI to obtain other stock or take on the risk themselves??? Looks like this Taylor report is going to have implications for Purp, hard to see how the valuers can be contractors rather than employees, unless they have the freedom to do other work aswell, such as an electrician would. | ltcm1
07/2/2018 09:06 | that is the way to protect your over inflated share price but i suppose they now sell the physical stock now | ntv
07/2/2018 09:01 | that is why the price didn't fall yesterday as they knew they were going to close the short positions WFJ | ntv |
