I have decided to not invest in the bonds. A 7% return although attractive does not seem to reflect the risk involved.

It seems bond yields overall aren't great right now. I really can't find anything I fancy.

Thank you. So easy that I missed it. Questor is one of the few DT sections to retain (most of) it's journalistic legitimacy.

There was an article in the "I" I think that said they could afford a fine of £200m - but any more and they would struggle. I guess the known unknown is how much will they get fined?
If it's too much then the bond repayment could be a problem.

I guess the result of the investigation is a binary event, I suspect if the day before a decision is published one can go short and long simultaneously with stop losses in place there will be money to be made.

A pair of profit warnings after a bungled reorganisation, the cancellation of dividends and the departure of the chief executive all mean shareholders in sub-prime lender Provident Financial have suffered terribly this year, since the shares have collapsed and been kicked out of the FTSE 100 for good measure.

But the company has three bonds in issue. They all come with yields to maturity that may appeal to risk-tolerant income-seekers and could prove great value if Provident can reassure investors that its short-term woes will not become long-term ones.

The Provident Financial 7pc 2020 bond, which matures on April 14 2020, pays an annual coupon of £7 on every £100 bond held. That equates to a running yield of 6.9pc and a yield to maturity of 6.6pc.

The question would-be investors must therefore ask is whether the company is capable of paying the coupons and then returning the principal (in...

Ah, so that's as far as I can read without a subscription which brings me to the most important question. Can they repay the principal? Any thoughts anyone? I'm off to read the accounts now but would appreciate any insight.

Russell250, I cant find it. Do you have a link to the article please or the journalist's name?

The words 'article' and 'Daily Telegraph' do not carry the same currency as they used to for me. The old DT (Bill Deedes et al) used to be a rattling good right wing broadsheet but nowadays, so much of the content is written as an article but is actually nothing more than sponsor oriented views or thinly concealed advertising and has to be treated with considerable caution.

interesting that deutsche bank seems to be trading this like a day trader

keeps for liquidity in market

have a solid % of your portfolio as long term hold ( for me applies) or
a short position

then trade will loose funds for daily movements

sipgguru

the ppi issue which has been prevalent for years had a much larger % penetration

so firstly bod impact will be less as %

take existing cash on books - plus another £120 million profit low end prediction prior to judgement

no dividends

so will struggle through - then fresh start no legislative actions

also paybacks to those impacted outside fsa judgement are gradual
