Infection Control

Infection Control and the fight against MRSA superbugs are two of the biggest concerns within today's medical and healthcare environments.
Much of the focus – rightly – is about personal and general hygiene. However, dealing with forms of bacteria that are becoming increasingly chemical resistant within a regime that routinely deploys chemicals in an attempt to kill them, means at best a haphazard result, and at worst, disaster for the infected patient. A far more reliable and therefore safer, alternative to the broad use of chemicals, and one growing in favour with many hospitals, is the application of steam sanitising equipment.
Using unsaturated 'dry' steam (so-called because it is generated from very little water compared to the volumes of steam resulting) and deployed at temperatures ranging from 150 to 180 degrees C destroys micro-organisms and bacteria in an instant – without the need for chemicals. Because the steam is applied under (low level) pressure it effectively penetrates cracks and crevices in tiles or grouting, surface scratches on worktops and even the metal folds on the bodies of medical equipment where bacteria may otherwise survive to breed and grow.
Laboratory evaluations using steam & vacuum machines from OspreyDeepclean have established the rapid killing of laboratory grown hospital infection strains, using dry steam only, in less than 2 seconds, including the antibiotic resistant superbugs 'MRSA' and 'VRE' which proved to be just as easy to kill using steam, as 'normal' infection microbes.
The tests were carried out in Yorkshire's largest Hospital Trust with the object of determining the effective destruction of microbes in their own natural environment, a slimy biofilm within which they embed themselves, in moist conditions such as baths, showers, and washbasins. Whilst this protective biofilm can resist powerful chemicals for prolonged periods, steam however rapidly transfers its total heat energy into the slime as it is composed of 97% water and the heat immediately kills the organism underneath.
Up to 500,000 germs can be present on 1 square inch of wash basin, shower tile or grout. Typically 90 to 100% of germs were killed in the bathroom environment in a 30 second exposure of toilet rims, washbasins, shower tiles and grouting.
Further trials were then carried out on mock hospital training wards and then repeated on patient inhabited geriatric wards over a three month period. These conditions are the most challenging, due to the frequent soiling of these areas and the difficulty of working, with minimal disruption, in busy working hospital wards and in patient sensitive areas.
Despite the adverse conditions, 80-90% microbial kill efficiency was achieved when measured at 30 minutes after steam & vacuum cleaning. Beyond doubt, dry steam helps prevent cross infection in hospitals, doctor's surgeries, nursing homes and children's nurseries, and is also of vital importance in food preparation sites.
Many hospitals are now also using OspreyDeepclean equipment for patient trolleys, wheelchairs, bed curtains, and in A&E areas. Steam penetrates where a chemical impregnated wipe cannot, so that the equipment to be cleaned does not need to be dismantled, nor even the curtains taken down, meaning beds may be returned to full use.
Swindon Great Western Hospital has ordered 40 Steam and Vacs from OspreyDeepclean, machines which are virtually as easy to use as an ordinary vacuum cleaner, not only with the advantage of steam sanitising, but also with filtration of vacuumed air through a special water tank, ensuring that exhausted air is bacteria and dust free, a major benefit for patients with respiratory difficulties. The water filtration tank is easily taken out and disposed of safely, again with no airborne bacteria or dust contamination.
10 steam cleaning machines have also recently been supplied to the internationally famous Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals: Vega machines for ward deep cleans, operating theatres, isolation and anaesthetic rooms, and the Steam and Vacs for rout ine ward use and for public areas such as washrooms. To illustrate the benefits of steam cleaning within this sector, consider the example of Guy's Hospital, which had six operating theatres being fully upgraded last summer and builders still on site.
OspreyDeepclean distributor and cleaning services provider, London based City & Kent, worked round the clock over a single weekend to bring each operating theatre up to full clinical hygiene, ready to re-start the hospital's operating schedule first thing on the Monday morning. Being very aware of the significant cost and distress of not meeting the deadline, with patients having to transfer to private sector hospitals for planned operations, was sufficient incentive for City & Kent to pull out all the stops to get the work done on time. Guy's Commissioning Manager recognised this effort by commenting: '...without the sterling efforts of your teams, we would have missed these dates, and the whole relocation would have been jeopardised. ... that you managed to clean the areas to such a high standard and pass all the microbiological air tests called for by our Infection Control Department, under these conditions and time constraints was a great achievement.' Steam is a proven method of improving hygiene generally, but these days the threat within hospitals of MRSA 'superbugs' is also successfully combated, as bacteria and micro-organisms are destroyed physically by the heat of the steam and not by chemical reaction. Furthermore, in and around a variety of fixtures and soft furnishings, steam is far more penetrative and effective than chemicals can ever be without complete immersion.

Keronite Limited ???

www.keronite.com

Surface Engineering - Light Alloy Enhancing Technology

Overview

Keronite Limited has developed a revolutionary material-enhancing surface engineering technology for the treatment of light metals such as alloys of aluminium, magnesium and titanium, their inter-metallides and metal matrix composites.

Market Overview and Competitive Advantages

The directors of Keronite believe the company's target markets will be worth approximately £2.5 billion within a decade and include:

* the replacement of traditional coating techniques in automotive, aerospace and general engineering applications; and
* the substitution of steel, plastic or cast iron by aluminium or magnesium, and the use of the new casting alloys.

The traditional coatings market for aluminium is expected to grow by approximately 4 per cent per annum. The treatments provided by most of Keronite's competitors do not work on magnesium, where usage is expected to grow over 22 per cent per annum in the electronics and automotive industries. The automotive industry is substantially increasing the use of magnesium and aluminium components in car production to reduce vehicle weight and fuel consumption. Keronite has particularly strong advantages over competing processes, in particular, hard anodising and chrome in corrosion protection, wear resistance and hardness. Keronite has hardness up to 2,000 hv on aluminium and up to 600 hv on magnesium.

Background and Update

Keronite is based in Cambridge. Keronite's patented technology has already been licensed to a number of companies and is being applied to consumer products in the eyewear industry and the motor sport arena, including Formula 1. In addition numerous Keronite machines have been sold and are generating royalty income. Keronite is currently in negotiations with over 50 companies to provide its technology.

The company has acquired a former subcontractor, the industrial equipment manufacturer, ICS Systems Limited. This acquisition will enable Keronite to maintain control of the production and supply of its coating machines.

Surface Engineering - Tungsten Carbide

Overview

Hardide Limited provides a new super hard and wear resistant coating solution for steel and hard alloy components. The technology allows a pure coating of tungsten carbide to be applied to components, which is a significant improvement over other technologies in this sector. Hardide extracts all of the inherent advantages of a well-established material in a unique and novel way and provides significant performance improvements over traditional engineering processes.

Background and Update

Hardide is based in Oxfordshire and holds a number of international patents. During 2003, the company completed its move to new 8,500sq. ft. industrial premises in Bicester where it has successfully installed two CVD furnaces. The second of the furnaces is a new generation, industrial size, machine which will enable the company to fulfill the commercial demand for the coating.

Hardide's strategy is to provide its coating solution to industrial users in the oil and gas, wire extrusion, automotive, and tooling industries via in-house coating services.

In September 2003, Hardide raised £1.98 million in a fundraising supported by Flintstone. A further funding round closed in May 2004, bringing the total raised over the 9-month period to £3.18 million. Flintstone participated in that fundraising and now owns

Electric motor technology

Overview

Ultra Motor Company Limited has developed a range of super efficient high torque, direct drive, brushed electric motors. Applications for the motors range from cars, cycles and boats, to chair lifts and medical hoists. The company can provide tailor made systems for a wide range of existing and emerging applications.

Market Overview and Competitive Advantages

All the company's motors are based on advances in brushed DC Motor technology and incorporate electro-mechanical configurations such as "transverse and planar coils", "harmonic offsets", "hybridised permanent magnets" and "switched reluctance-induction" which are combined to increase the operational efficiency of conventional DC motors by up to 30 per cent.

* The company's patent pending motor architecture is able to generate torque of up to 200 Newton meters (147 lb/ft) per kilowatt of power – 50 per cent more than the best of the rest.
* Additionally, where weight saving and size are paramount, the ultra-compact motors can squeeze a record breaking 57 Newton meters (42 lb/ft) of torque out of every kilogram.
* For durability, the motors have only one moving part. Power is not compromised and what's more, with no gears to go wrong, the motors are virtually maintenance free.
* The motors can be driven by any energy source from mains electricity (transformed), batteries, solar cells to fuel cells and from other renewable sources such as wind, wave and tidal turbines. With no gas, particulate or noise emissions, the motors finally provide the definitive answer to electric propulsion.

Background and Update

Since June 2003 and following the initial investment by Flintstone, the technology has gone from strength to strength. Following exhaustive testing at Southampton University, the motors have been presented at a series of road shows in India where there has been considerable interest from bike and engine manufacturers who are looking to develop and sell the technology directly to the Asian market.

Ultra Motor issued 40,000 equity shares in March 2004 to a new investor for £625,000. Flintstone currently owns 44.4% of Ultra Motor.

simple thing is companies do not have early results unless there is very good news and if there is bad news then interim results get pushed back to the 3 month limit.

Shavian, I always DMOR, you know!

I see the new thread, courtesy of 2004jj has a slightly more bullish slant. Not a big enough outfit to stand two threads, so I won't try.

However, if the cleaning side generates anything like pbt £2.7m, and the legacy assets are returned to shareholders in some way, this would certainly justify a closer look.

British Bulls

BUY-IF

The last two candlesticks formed a Bullish Doji Star Pattern . This is a bullish reversal pattern that marks a potential change in trend.

Is this finally a good time to buy? Well, it depends. First check what happened at after hours trading and future values. Then, follow the next session very carefully and be on your toes. This candlestick pattern is a bullish one, but we have to see whether it will be confirmed or not.

Do you see a gap-up at the market open? Do you see a white candlestick forming with a higher close at the session's end? Shortly, is it a nice bullish day? If so, place your buy orders and open new long positions. The market is now on the bull side.
