Hi Mangal

I'm still around, I will if you tell me how! Thanks.

Just shows what you can achieve with a share by sticking to your beliefs and being patient. I am very long BBA at the moment, have a look at that chart and see what you think! Fundamentals have a lot going for it also.

Hi FR, I've just looked back on the posts here & realize that you have indeed been highligting Bidu, Skype & Focus Media for quite sometime now. It appears from your posts that PEQ is still holding them - bodes well for the future. If they have had the foresight to invest in such terrific companies, it's possible that they have invested in some other hidden gems too!

royaloak, if you're still around can you please include a chart in the header ?

Hi kunama and mangal - nice to see some new names.

Good increase in NAV, and I'm still hoping that there is a 4th jewel in the portfolio. Its amazing to see just how much can be made on one or two shares whilst the rest of the portfolio delivers bank interest typ returns.

This Co has made some great investments; it had a stake in one of best floatation this year- baiudu.com. I gather it also has holding in Skype, which I think is being bought out soon. Hold on- there is lots more to come.

Hi FR and RO.

I've held these since they were floated as the eminently web searchable Net Investor. It's been a long haul but I'm actually starting to hope that I may even get a return on the investment.

Focus Media dominates the market in which it operates (a staggering 82% of the 10 largest cities in China, in a market that is expanding rapidly), and is extending its breadth through strategic partnerships. Recently Focus acquired Infoachieve which specialises in escalator advertising.

Qtr-on-qtr revenue growth in Q3(+33%) and profit growth (+64%) continues and is forecast to be at least 15% and 20% for the current quarter (Q4). In six months the share price has gone from US $20 to approx US $30 to leave the company on a PE ratio of approx 40. However, the rapid growth that this company is going through soon brings this down to a reasonable level.

Many of the managers are chinese citizens who have held senior posts overseas in advertising. Major customers include P&G, Audi, Samsung, Sony and Microsoft, appealing to the newly affluent middle classes.

All in all a good share in its own right, but risk can obviously be lowered by investing in a fund such as this one.

Whats also important to appreciate with this share (PEQ) is that the NAV relate to 30 Sept ie are 2 months out of date. Given the growth figures of the three jewels in PEQ's crown, a share price/NAV increase is almost guaranteed.

30p increase this month in the NAV.

As detailed this boils down to 3 companies - Focus Media, Skype and Bidu - all of whom appear to be doing very well at the moment. However, this discounts the potential in the remaining portfolio which has yet to emerge.

Still trading at a discount, so still holding.

Hi Royal - nice to know you remain in.

I'm letting this one run as well as the recent deals have given me renewed optimism. BIDU still seems to be settling into the market and has been quite volatile as the market tries to evaluate. However, the underlying sales growth looks good, and to me more importantly the fact that is is China's number 1 website (based on hits) shows the potential behind this. Clearly they can learn from the masters in the west and build a model accordingly.

Obviously in our position the success of BIDU takes time to be reflected in PEQ's share price. I'm personally not expecting much from the soon to be announced NAV (could even be a fall over the month), but hope to see growth over the coming months.

Good luck.

Hi Flackwell

I'm still in, apart from anything else the £ could weaken the next few months the way our economy is, so could have much further to run!

Bidu continues to storm along - in the 3 months to 30/09/05 the top site in China. Revenues advanced 28% ish qtr on qtr with profits falling as the costs of a new centre, extra capacity, and share based incentives hit the accounts. However, this clearly is an investment for the future.

The directors are optimistic for Q4, and it would appear with every good reason.

NAV due soon which may show a slight fall over the month but this share is looking more and more attractive by the day.

The $13m being in the form of e-bay shares or cash proffered by them.

Further excellent news today - PEQ's indirect interest in Skype, the voice over internet provider, means that PEQ has an interest with a market value of $13m - this is to be received in a mixture of cash and shares.

A little research undertaken and what an amazing find.

We are talking about the webs 6th largest site GLOBALLY.

Qtr on Qtr performance is startling and we're currently looking at US$ 9 - 10m for the current qtr - growth above 100% yr-on-yr.

Obviously this company should continue this rate of growth as the Chinese economy expands - potentially this is the Chinese equivalent of Google, e-bay or yahoo.

Be grateful if there any chinese investors out there who can offer their views of baidu.com.

RO - I presume that the recent rises are largely down to the Nasdaq gains of BIDU which yesterday rose quite sharply.

Will have to research this one a wee bit more

What are investors after ?

Excellent news and thanks for posting Mangal - I've got out of the habit of monitoring this one, and at the back of my mind was holding this purely as a currency play.

Be interesting to see if this generates some interest in PEQ.

flackwell, over much of its life arbs/discount players have come in and gone. db are just the latest. the key point with peq is the recent laxey involvement who now on the board. thats a much better pointer than the db movements. however, laxey can make profits out of sits where lesser mortals struggle to so its not an open and shut case.

Over the period I've owned these I've been tempted to sell as there is relatively little movement with this one. However, I hadn't caught the stake building announcement so shall have another look at this.

Flackwell asks if there is any news to catch up on. Well one piece is that "Deutsche bank and it's subsidiaries" have increased their holdings from 3,517,000 shares (7.034%) on Dec 23rd 2004 to 6,719,268 (13.44% - nearly double)by 1st Feb. 2005.

I'd agree there, and hence the reason for my initial purchase. I'll hang on for a few months and re-assess then.

Let's hope we've both got something to crow about then.
