01/12/2006 12:13 | Noticed they have withdrawn a planning application for their Bromley site in London. This is the one 'digitalinvestor' posted the story about couple of weeks ago (Bromley Times 01 November 2006 : School 'football strip' sparks row "STRIPPERS could soon be performing on the grounds of a secondary school, say residents. The Ravensbourne School in Hayes Lane, Bromley, has agreed to lease playing fields to five-a-side football operator Powerleague but residents have been alarmed to discover adult entertainment has been a regular fixture at the league's prize-giving nights.") | cupasoup2006

10/11/2006 10:27 | the new Cenkos numbers for this seem much lower than Evolution's figures.... I think they revalued and so increased the value of their assets and increased depreciation charge... thus both increase depreciation ... thus earnings gone down... So I am out for now... yes these are all non-cash charges but they are meant to reflect economic reality... last results weren't massively positive in my view.... still should be a good long-term hold but not for me at the moment Slapper | slapdash
06/11/2006 08:11 | Came across this article online - Bromley Times: School 'football strip' sparks row 01 November 2006 STRIPPERS could soon be performing on the grounds of a secondary school, say residents. The Ravensbourne School in Hayes Lane, Bromley, has agreed to lease playing fields to five-a-side football operator Powerleague but residents have been alarmed to discover adult entertainment has been a regular fixture at the league's prize-giving nights. The fields are already the subject of a planning application, that will be heard later this month. One concerned neighbour said: "Apart from the objections over noise, lighting, traffic, and the loss of school playing fields, I find it absolutely incredible the school could allow this on a school location. "The schoolchildren will know there are strippers coming in at night. I don't know what kind of message that sends out to them." Staff at the nearby Powerleague centre in Newham, east London, told the Bromley Times that "strippers dancing around" were used two or three times a year and were present at an awards night held only last month. However, a Powerleague spokesman claimed it was company policy not to allow such entertainment, and accused opponents of the application of exaggerating the claims. He said: "I don't think people have seen strippers in other centres. They have attempted to get someone to say that but it is not the case. "It is more to do with people not wanting to have a community-led five-a-side facility that will significantly enhance young peoples' lives and their ability to keep fit, enjoy sport and keep off the streets. "This is a very positive opportunity for the area." The spokesman added that there would be no bar on the site, making concerns over adult entertainment a "non-issue", although the school applied for, and was granted, an alcohol licence in the summer. However, an adult entertainment licence, something never before granted in Bromley, would have to be applied for before any "public dancing" could take place. A planning application has been submitted to build 10 floodlit all-weather pitches at the school, resurface an existing 11-a-side pitch and extend the sports hall. It is likely to be heard later this month. The Ravensbourne School was unavailable to comment. | digitalinvestor
17/10/2006 08:27 | As predicted this has come off some what.... Away from the PR spin the results were faily underwhelming... Could be a buying opportunity if it comes off a significant amount further.. Slapster | slapdash
05/10/2006 20:40 | Sorry, that one extra week means that every figure is almost 2% better than the accounts imply, not 1%. (Maths was never my strong point.) Nothing can grow for ever, dona, or the whole world would be covered with muddied oafs on plastic pitches. Growth could be fairly spectacular for 4-5 years, though, and that will do me. All I know about the management is that they have delivered this year. | diogenesj
05/10/2006 18:48 | Margins are low, ROCE (inclusing debt) is low, gearing is high, accounts are confusing with all the negative goodwill being written back and exceptional items etc - leaves a disatisfied after-taste somehow. If they are competing with GOAL how long can either plan to grow by expansion - although I guess there are a good many mid-size towns still to get one? How do you all rate the management of this company? df | donaferentes
05/10/2006 18:44 | Well, there are a number of points there, Slapper. This year's results covered 52 weeks, whereas last year's were for 53 weeks. That means every figure was about 1% better than the results implied. Like for like pitch income was up 6%; there was a drop in bar sales (partly due to the smoking ban) and other income, which they may hope to make up this year. The results before exceptionals were substantially ahead of forecasts. Cash flow was very strong, and there was an unexpected dividend, which shows confidence. I don't have a very clear idea of what they will do next year, so I will have to wait for their broker's forecasts. But my guess is that forecasts may be raised, which will mean that the shares are not expensive and have considerable upside. I could be wrong, of course (I often am), and it takes two views to make a market. :-) | diogenesj
05/10/2006 17:14 | yup for now.... may try to interpret the results a bit more closely at some point and may come back in if the price falls... But a growth business should have like-for-likes more than 3%... that is less than inflation and economic growth.. hardly shows strength.... I would of expected them to increase in-line with economic growth which is say volume sales increase of 2% and then also inflation which is about 2%... Goal increased its like-for-like by 5%... much better and healthier.... So all-in-all pretty poor numbers... EPS also looked quite low after dilution..... Slapper | slapdash
05/10/2006 16:40 | Bye, Slapper. | diogenesj
04/10/2006 12:33 | couldn't understand the diluted versus non-diluted earnings per share and all the adjustments Like for likes didn't seem that great at only 3%... increased depreciation charge means less profits going forward... Just didn't seem that stellar results and lots of odds and ends.. I can see these have the potential to fall so have taken my profits.. Slapper | slapdash
03/10/2006 14:25 | Well they looked pretty good to me, although a bit muddied by the exceptionals. Strong cash flow too, and an unexpected dividend. Can't quite understand why Goal is on such a high rating and these are so relatively cheap. | diogenesj
03/10/2006 13:29 | on second thoughts not that exciting... sold this AM..... Slapper... | slapdash
