Yes, this is a higher quality company than it used to be. Both divisions have enjoyed an improvement in their markets and both have launched higher value products that have sold well.

R&D spend probably has fallen as a proportion of earnings. Certainly borrowings have fallen and it looks like trade creditor terms have lengthened (indicating greater supplier confidence in PRV). But going forward, a fall in Aluminium production would hit both trends.

I think the company is strong enough to make an acquisition to produce some growth in EPS in FY-14. But it would have to be the right acquisition and it would have to be soon.

Cellars, I thought investment in R&D had reduced significantly in recent years but with the benefits of past expenditure now coming through it is paying down debt?

PRV is not on its own - a few good engineering shares are showing relative weakness.
The DS article may well be a short term blip in a trend.
The share price is only down to the 50 week ema so this is not yet a big deal (unless you are a trader, I guess).
My "buy it now" price is 125.
Anyone seen similarities in other good engineering shares that they would buy on weakness?

When Schwartz said he'd buy more if the price came back a bit, I wonder what number he had in mind..

Must admit that, despite my previous post, DS' article made me think a bit. Besides, he does normally have quite an effect on prices, so I'm now out purely to conserve capital. The first trade of the day was mine ( a sell, not a buy as reported by ADVFN) plus others, so in theory I could already buy in at a deal cheaper than I sold.

No news is due until early December, so I may well buy back in before or after that, perhaps in bigger size than before if the price is right. This is a quality stock, so over time I'm sure there's no need for me to wish holders good luck, but it's always good to be prudent! Especially in what is after all a dodgy economic environment.

Perfectly reasonable FT article ba...
prv can't be immune if there is a downturn in one of its sectors.
my view is that production in the aero sector will balance the auto.
Schwartz also says that the news is in the price.
I think this is true - backwards PER of 16.
I am looking to increase out of income on any weakness, so I welcome articles such as that in the FT.
But then I am not a trader and Sch is talking trader talk.

Let's hope we can shrug off the David Schwartz sell advice in the Sat FT without too much damage today

Volumes are tiny - just 55k shares traded. Which suggests that the MMs are overcompensating in looking for stock and have marked down accordingly.

Of course there have been various indications of a slowdown recently in Europe in certain areas - but given the very bullish IMS of only 3 weeks ago, plus PRV's involvement in the booming areas of aerospace and healthcare, and its global sales (Europe is only 15% of sales) I'm hopeful that PRV will continue to outperform as per this current year.

What has caused the shares to retrace this morning? Could it be belated read across from Cookson & Morgan Crucible to the aluminium side of things at Porvair? Anyone else any ideas?

I normally find that if companies are less than 10% ahead of expectation,s then they don't say they're trading ahead of those expectations - you normally find out on the day that results are ahead, but by less than than the notionally announceable 10%.

With PRV already saying they're ahead I assumed that therefore they would be at least 10% ahead. You could be right though.

Up again today anyway!

That's an interesting point. Maybe I'm wrong but as they don't use the word significant, and as the IMS was at year end, I'd assumed they expected to be less than 10% ahead of current forecasts.

Still I'm not doing very well with PRV, so who knows?

Yes, shame I sold after the IMS. I was just concerned re the declining sales growth but the market obviously does not share that concern.

We could easily see that £1.50 tomorrow, after letting a few sellers away after the IMS it's buyers time again.

One of my top holdings at the moment. Solid progress of late after a good im statement. Little press comment and quiet on the BBs - when this one gets a little more attention, they might fly.
