Can't by from HL site either this morning. Perhaps tech stocks starting to become defensive in terms of the future.

253, I agree. If you need all your money in a week, oh dear. If you need all your money in a year then things are pretty tough, if you need all your money in 10 years then the outcome from the last few weeks have been a great opportunity.

They fell more is due to the market panic and gone risk off! Therefore all of them have gone from either a premium or very small discount to nor a fair discount. Their NAV performance is not worse than the market. Should this panic sale continue, it will present a great investment opportunity in some great business represented by these trusts.

basstrend - I agree that a 17% fall in a week is a lot! But I suppose you have to take into account how well most of these trusts have performed over the last one year, 3 years or 5 years. PCT has been steadily rising for long time now on the back of the tech boom and it was inevitably going to take a quite a fall in a correction because holders would scramble to lock in their profits. I don't hold ATT, but I think it's quite similar to PCT. Scottish Mortgage has been the big success story of the whole Investment Trust universe. The assets had got to over £10bn. Tesla was the biggest holding. Almost all of the top 10 holdings have massive exposure to China. I've slowly trimmed my position in SMY over the last few years, but shouldn't have because it has gone on rising and has been a superb way to getting exposure to international global growth companies. Britain unfortunately has none. But again, it was always going to fall sharply in a correction for the same reasons as PCT. Smithson ditto. Its totally invested in mid-cap, high-growth techy plays that have done really well. It will be interesting to se if these recover faster than the general market. I don't know the Throgmorton Trust or the Manchester & London Trust.

I hold six investment trusts in my SIPP, including PCT and they all took a severe bashing last week. Polar Capital Trust fell by a huge 14.86% !! In just one week the average drop was 17%, which is quite a bit higher than the global markets dropped in the last week. Not sure I understand why ITs suffered worse (other than travel related stocks) compared to other stocks and indices.. Anyway, here's the drop I observed on the 6 trusts mentioned above, in the last 5 market days only - 18.95% ATT - Allianz Technology Trust 18.28% THRG - BlackRock Throgmorton Trust 18.85% MNL - Manchester & London Inv Trust 14.86% PCT - Polar Capital Trust 13.69% SMT - Scottish Mortgage Trust 17.39% SSON - Smithson Inv Trust NB the average 5 day drop across these 6 IT's is: 17% - quite shocking really!

but virtually discount to NAV which is highly unusual and could mean steep losses if US markets become bearish which is not impossible but unlikely

Interesting article in Telegraph Money today, about Polar Technology and Allianz Technology shares running at a discount to value of underlying holdings. Gist of this is that there is no good reason for this. Sam Murphy at Numis said he could not see any fundamental reason for the discounts. Peter Hewitt of BMO Global Asset management said he did not think the discounts were justified.

The decision was made as ATT have decided to issue more shares. This, I interpret is a short term signal that the shares in ATT will be pretty static and thus trading at a premium to assets. As there is no sign that the appetite for technology is slowing, my decision was made as PCT is a sector leader but with a broader portfolio of holdings. Consequently my exposure to the technology sector will remain the same in terms of cash at stake, but may allow me to protect any discount widening that could occur when markets are less bullish

Funny, I was actually thinking about selling some of my PCT holding. Just not sure how much longer these big tech stocks can keep going up?! Yes they are all great companies but some of the valuations are surely looking a bit rich by now..

I have recently sold part of my holding in ATT and have switched into PCT. Time will tell, of course, but the decision was made on the basis that ATT are at a premium to their assets whereas PCT seem underpriced. Price will probably tank now, of course!
