Well emporio, mbo theory is interesting but if current management are not too careful all that will be left in the buy out will be nasty lease liabilities, redundancy payments and fixtures and fittings, because as far as i can see many of the customers are currently going else where!

Completely agree with the £2 target but wouldnt buy in anywhere above this. I t wouldnt surprise me to see PIZ go lower than this before the end of the year and then bounce back to the £2 level.

Wasn't ASK set up by the same people who established PE?

come on fred - you'd better get down to one of the restaurants to eat your humble pizzas before the whole shebang closes.

So far an interesting and informative thread, how long before the morons appear ?? Anyway, theres our questions answered for the last few weeks, this mornings announcement...'trading not improved'. Not looking too good, will watch these today hope for better volume and for a more reasonable spread.

Actually, the pizzas were always small. It's just that before you didn't have Ask Pizza and others to compare them to. The cannibalisation is definitely true. Every so often I get the urge for a PE pizza and satisfy it with a takeout from Sainsbury and I can't think the last time I went. Also, many of the other places like Zizzi's are lighter, airier, less formulaic and generally more of an occasion. I also have a niggling impresion that the wine is less good than in the days when they had Frescobaldi chiantis.

The big question is whether, when the credit crunch comes, the middle classes are going to leave the wide variety of other restaurants they have been frequenting and come back to Pizza Express as to a lost friend. I fear not. The margin between some good value restaurants and PE has narrowed with some quite high (in percentage terms) price rises and a night out at PE is actually not that cheap when you can pay a tenner more for a proper meal.

200p is my view, 5x Prospective based on consensus earnings forecast 2003 is fair value for Pizza Express, especially in a bear market, i think we will see this level before Xmass, if not before.

At 200p you start to recognize the high brand status (now being devalued), some prime restuarant locations and the cash generative nature of the business which should attract some buyers....but not many!

Alot of home truths spoken there, the failed attempt at a floor at £3.00 has also gone. As an aside I recently went there with friends and the first thing we all noticed was why are the pizzas smaller ? Ok they are nice yes, but if you try to hoodwink customers they go elsewhere. Look at the Deep Pan Pizzas in Central London, eat all you can salad pizzas whatever else you can find lying about all for a fiver, a little desperate methinks. They, PIZ, have undoubtedly cheapened their own brand and although they are cash generative i cannot see where the growth will come from. All of that said, the PE is very undemanding but with £3.00 failing to attract buyers, what level will ?

Pizza Express needs to re-invent it's self fast or be relegated to a downsized and totally devalued operation.

Their strategy has been to cannibalize their own market, pizza to go/supermarket pizzas etc, whilst not moving forward and innovating their menues.

Where are the wood fired Pizza Express's?

Management are sleep walking to disaster, many outlets cannot be profitable, some obviously are and there is a certain degree of loyalty with a reducing number of customers, but this cannot be enough...

Until a clear and new strategy is developed i say this company is a SELL down to 200p, false rumours of MBO's may surface but i believe these are non-starters because sales are collapsing, i.e there is no growth vision.

haven't bought any for a couple of days, needs a bad wall street i think, for the price to fall again (note: in the market maskers eyes and money manglers lexicon, there is a clear connection between eating pizzas and the overpriced share prices in the usa)- but please collapse and let me buy lower down.....pleeeeease!!!!!!
