How the mighty fall...... one couple eating in the Bayswater outlet of Pizza Express on a Friday night at around 8pm.

In the 1980's you might of had to queue 10/15 minutes to get a table.

Competition too strong and too numerous now in the 21st century, wood fired pizzas lead the way forward in this segment of restaurant market.

This company will have to evolve fast, in many areas or it will downsize fast as all but a few outlets remain profitable.

Operational costs are increasing through the nature of upwards only commercial leases, wages increase year on year for skilled labour, this can only mean a big squeeze on profits.

Companies often deny things and soon afterwards things happen. Could they be in discussions from today (ie after the statement of denial)?
I just ask the question!!

I think they have to wait 6 months from an official denial (assuming there was one - I'm only reporting what I heard 2nd hand, though the share price would seem to bear it out) - they can't deny then immediately change their minds

Maybe so, but it is at least nice to see a reasonable spread for once

How many times do you see stories like this after a share price has plummeted so the smart money can conveniently offload stock to niave buyers

My worry is that the share price is being underpinned by an 8p dividend payment up until Oct 4. I think a lot of people are holding just for this dividend and may sell stock aferwards so we could see a 20p decline on Oct 5th. Just an opinion but I will wait until then before buying any.

I agree with BigBoyo -- having been to Zizzi's once, none of the three of us will be going back -- the food (both pizza & pasta) was decidedly mediocre. Personally, I feel Pizza Express do a much better job of service & food. Interestingly, Zizzi's score slightly better (1pt) than PIZ in the new Zagat, but more expensive.

Having said that, more variety and/or seasonal menu additions (ala Wagamama) wouldn't hurt PIZ. The "decent food at a reasonable price" sector is much larger than a few years ago, and provides more competition. PIZ's offering is basically unchanged, and isn't going to provide the stellar growth of the 90s. I think the current PE under 8 reflects disappointment that the company is not immune to competition and the general downtown. C'est la vie.

Edmund.

Isn't Zizzi one of Ask's alternative brands? How are they (ASK) doing?

A new CafePasta restaurant (PIZ brand) opens near me (York) in a couple
of weeks - I'll post if I go there.
