28/2/2008 16:18 | Capital reduction and name change I have received a letter from my bank today indicating that the board of Pipex is proposing a name change to Freedom4 Communications and that 0.9 pence of each issued ordinary share of 0.01p will be cancelled and the nominal value reduced to 0.001p. These changes are subject to shareholder approval at the General Meeting to be held on 3rd March. Does this mean we will receive a cash payment of ~9p per share and retain a shareholding in Freedom4? | wrider
28/2/2008 12:34 | Somerfield trialling WiMAX WAN Posted by Nicole Kobie at 8:20AM, Thursday 28th February 2008 The grocery retailer is set to be the first to use Vanco's WiMAX services on a wide area network. Supermarket retailer Somerfield will be the first company to pilot Vanco's WiMAX offering for a corporate Wide Area Network (WAN), the virtual network operator announced in Barcelona today. Claiming to be the first managed services provider to offer WAN via WiMAX, Vanco said it will be offering the technology as part of its multi-technology solutions for businesses. The VNO doesn't own any infrastructure, instead setting up and managing services across a variety of operators for businesses. The WiMAX aspect has been sourced from Vialtus Solutions' FREEDOM4. Somerfield, which signed a £18.9 million contract with Vanco in 2006, will trial the service in Manchester beginning in March, with eventual plans to roll it out across locations in 50 UK cities, said Steve McKeaveney, Vanco's head of technical consulting in the UK. Using WiMAX-powered wireless access could help extend higher bandwidth DSL coverage to places which haven't got great connections, McKeaveney said. "The real challenge is when you can't get DSL where you like it, but you still want [higher] bandwidth," he said. The WiMAX service could also be used to offer always-on backup and disaster recovery, he said, adding that as it's easier to rollout - at seven days compared to 10 for DSL and longer for MPLS - it can boost implementation times. Graham Currier, business development director at WiMAX network provider Freedom4, said: "WiMAX offers the benefits of a 'personal' wireless service for staff on the move, temporary installations and those needing to send as well as receive large files." As a virtual network operator, the technology isn't the main focus for Vanco, however. "It doesn't matter to us, as a service provider," McKeaveney said. "It could be wired, 3G or WiMAX, it doesn't matter... in some areas, WiMAX will be deployed, so we'll tap into that." | troys
28/2/2008 07:12 | WiMAX makes it into Vanco portfolio of managed services by Guy J Kewney | posted on 27 February 2008 -------------------- This is not, emphasised Vanco CEO Allen Timpany, a move into wireless carrier business - but his company is going to offer WiMAX access "as part of its multi-technology WAN network solutions" business. The company describes itself as "asset-lite" - it doesn't own infrastructure but just manages communications over a wide variety of other networks for its clients. It claims that at nearly £300 M, it's the biggest such virtual "value added network" provider in the world. At an open day in Barcelona today, the company revealed that mobile comms is becoming a steadily greater part of its 20-year-old business - but Timpany said that it was most unlikely that he'd ever start operating as a mobile virtual network operator just because of a move into WiMAX. "We looked into the business of being an MVNO three years ago," he told NewsWireless in an exclusive interview. "We drew up a business plan, and came to the conclusion that we could do a significantly good job for out clients - providing them with 25% better costs at least - but decided against the move." The company decided that it would be a "good way to upset a lot of mobile carriers we have to work with," Tympany summarised." The WiMAX deal simply adds wireless point to point links across the Vialtus (formerly Pipex) spectrum. Andy Summer, MD of Vanco UK, issued a PR statement explaining that the deployment, for Somerfield, was already running. The statement included a comment by Graham Currier, Business Development Director at Freedom4 to the effect that this year "has been touted as the year of WiMAX in the UK." Currier described this as "another step in developing a robust broadband wireless solution for corporate users." He then went on to somewhat confuse the issue of what Vanco is doing - point to point backhaul - by talking about "the benefits of a 'personal' wireless service for staff on the move," which doesn't appear to be what this deal encompasses | troys
