The last accounts were poor:

If you read the notes the Going Concern statement is worrying. They expect to breach covenants in June 2025 . Ideally you try to do something to avoid a covenant breach rather than just waiting until it happens!

There are significant risks to the downside so it's not a surprise to see people selling.

Does anyone how much the sale of Koffiefontein mine would be worth if it goes through? Surely it would help massively to debt and capex cost for rest of 2024 and beyond.

Interesting movement lately…a few big trades coming through in last 2 days. Market capital of the company still below 135m. Despite solid rise late yesterday no sign of sell off. Positive for 2024 imo

Someone is buying today, could double in price from here in 2024

Why would anybody buy these shares?
First up, buying the debt would be a much safer play. But even that is too risky for me.
For my money PDL is now on a downward spiral to a second debt-for-equity swap, wiping out current shareholders. IMO, it would take quite a turnaround in the diamond market and an amazing run of special stones for them to avoid this fate.

Predicting one more go around next year to wipe out equity holders (diluted to sub-10% on the last debt-for-equity) before taking it private if operations are looking good. Bondholders in control here and will call the shots.

Crunching the numbers

c.$60m cash to fund capex/debt ($17m working capital +$45m other net current assets)
-$103m capital expenditure commitments
-$222m debt/borrowings due in 2.5 years

=$265m balance to be funded by operations (operating outflow H1 2023: -$24m)

-$100m long-term environmental liabilities the cherry on top
