I see . so maybe just stocks for trading as many stocks are. But strange that SVT was almost taken over recently as p/e ratios are high in utility stocks .

In 2014 Ofwat will set out each companies' price, investment and service package in their final determination of price limits. This will cover water and sewerage services between 2015 and 2020.

I take your point but it will probably be many years before interest rates on savings accounts will come close to matching the yields on utility stocks . As you say , in the distant future it might happen but not in next few years based on Carney's recent speech .

Looking to the more distant future the dividend yield should lead to a lower share price
As interest rates rise PNN becomes less attractive compared with bonds and PNN's borrowing costs will rise. Of course the regulatory review will also be a major factor determining the share price and utility shares tend to decline in the year preceding a review.

thanks Miata and I now notice other utility companies such as SSE pay uncovered dividends . they are not performing lately but the dividend yield should mean a higher share price in future .

Perhaps a look at page 106 of the statutory accounts will shed more light.

Earnings before exceptional items and deferred tax 2013 = £154.9m
Dividends 2013 = £103.8m

A major factor reducing the statutory eps was the exceptional charges totalling £150 million net of tax for the write down of landfill facilities. These charges have no cash impact and should be viewed in the context of Pennon's assets of £4.8 BILLION.

I do not quite get it as earnings per share are well below the dividend payout ? Does this suggest high risk or the norm for utilities to pay out of capital ?

MIATA

Thank you for 676.

I am new to PNN and had not worked out that yesterday's fall as equating fully with going Ex-Div.

No significance in shares awarded and part sales to pay the tax on the awards.

Ian McAulay has been appointed as an executive director of the group's board and as chief executive of its subsidiary company Viridor. McAulay, who is currently chief of global strategy and corporate development with US waste treatment company MWH Global, takes up his new roles next month, on 9 September.

'08 August 2013 Interim Management Statement'

Which way will the share price go then?

Directors dealt sold? yesterday.

Were they constrained to deal before the Interim Statement?

Or did they not expect an uplift in SP?

MIATA, I did but I can only see last years amount that was paid.

I do not understand why you have this attitude, if you go back over the past posts on other boards you will find times when you have thanked me for info I have passed to you!

From FTAlphaville this morning.

Anousha's been badgering me this morning about some theory that Abu Dhabi might go after Pennon.
Re Severn ..
One industry specialist said the developments made it unlikely for a
counterbidder to emerge given the reticence of the board to engage in
talks and now potentially shielded the other two listed UK water
companies from buyout approaches as the sector faces a regulatory
review.
It is unclear what the consortium will do next. One potential bid
target is a stake in Yorkshire Water that is being up for sale by
shareholders, UU is probably too big for anyone pennon isn't pure water although as a counterpoint I've also been told in the past water companies tend not to get counter bids but someone ends up going for something else but generally the trend of UK public to privates has not been a happy one this year.
