Upbeat retail data and weak pound boosts FTSE

StockMarketWire.com

After a run of closing all-time highs, the blue chip index continued to move higher and gained 0.2% to 7,251. A weak pound against the dollar and a rally by retail stocks on positive independent data helped to keep the FTSE 100's upward momentum.

Retail stocks were boosted by the British Retail Consortium's (BRC) report of a strong Christmas week, which encouraged spending growth in December and World Kantar figures.

Asagi,You might be right - i had been waiting for an entry point into cake for 12 months or so - was looking for a lower earnings multiple - missed the brexit dip but was very pleased to get chance to scoop some up in November and December in the 270 -275 range. I would have thought a number of investors will have done similar and with 20% gain have been booking profits especially in 320-328 rangeI expect things to move on again once rebalancing taken place. Also I have a feeling that if funds want in the mms are happy manipulate to facilitate lower entry point.I get the feeling a lot of people are watching closely and like myself have buy limits in place should there be any further dips in the price. I'm certainly looking to add to my holding but very happy to wait.Jozo

Dear jozo,

Understood but look at the price action yesterday. Lots of buying first thing past 320p. Offer as high as 328p at one point. The rise was later crushed by selling. I don't think the bid has closed over 320p since September. It smacks of an overhang to me.

the shares put in a good rise until reaching 320p a couple of weeks ago. Since then, they have failed to make any meaningful break above the level. I conclude that one, or a collection of fund managers is happy to sell around that level meaning that we pause there, even at high volumes.
