Escoamento de frutas aumentou 65% no último ano; terminal está preparado para manter um crescimento anual de 30% em movimentação de cargas refrigeradas

Tecon Salvador has a presence in the most irrigated horticulture fair in Latin America
Run of fruit increased by 65% last year; terminal is prepared to maintain an annual growth of 30% in handling refrigerated cargoes
Tecon Salvador - container terminal operated by Wilson Sons Group - this week participates in the FENAGRI Expovale 2013, the largest fair of irrigated horticulture in Latin America that happens in Juazeiro (BA) 14-19 of May. The terminal registered in the last year its biggest move since it was privatized in 2000, with great emphasis on the growth in shipments of fruit from the São Francisco Valley.
Last year, the handling of cargo increased 65%, from 85 000 tonnes in 2011 to 142,000 tonnes handled in 2012. "Due to the commercial efforts of previous years, Salvador was prominent in the export of fruit in the Northeast, especially grape and mango from the Vale do Rio São Francisco. We want to achieve an annual growth of 30% in the segment of reefer [refrigerated cargo], "says Demir Lawrence, director of Tecon Salvador.
According to the Association of Producers and Exporters of horticultural and derivatives, Valley San Francisco (Valexport) in 2013 is expected to produce approximately 850,000 tons of manga and 208 tons of grapes in the region.
To account for the export of the crop, an alternative suggested by the association is to diversify the flow between the nearest ports. "The reason is precisely to prevent that containers are held up in ports due to logistical bottlenecks, and the overbooking shipping companies," explains Coordinator Exports Valexport, Tássio Lustoza.
After expansion investments today Tecon Salvador has 674 outlets in the courtyard dedicated to refrigerated storage, and by the end of 2013, will feature some 230 outlets in the Depot (backyard) for support. There is also the reefer intelligence service, an exclusive channel for customer service for this segment, scheduling and degate window berthing.
"Our challenge is for better attention of refrigerated containers. The business was restructured to give support and dedicated service. Our terminal is now also ready to meet the largest container ships in the world, "says Patricia Iglesias, commercial manager of Tecon Salvador.

Tecon Rio Grande begins shipment of soy in containers
Fifty-six containers follow for the the Asian market
The Tecon Rio Grande, terminal containers of the Port of Rio Grande operated by Wilson Sons Group, started in May a project for the containerization for new cargoes. The first stage consists of the shipment to the Asian market for 56 containers of soy beans, previously exported in bulk ships. The load was split in two lots for different exporters. The first of 11 containers, follows in the ship Maullín MLL, of ship line CMA-CGM, the second 45 containers on the vessel Aliança Urca, of MAERSK.

For the shipment, Tecon Rio Grande has two logistic options: one, storing in containers of origin using the rail service of Brado Logistica to the terminal and the other, storing in containers of the retroarea using the services of the company Vanzin Serviços Aduaneiros.

The runoff of exports of soy in containers has favorable advantages for both producers and exporters, like the possibility to reach markets of buyers of lower volumes, higher trace-ability of cargo, ease of transshipment and more importantly, take advantage of the competitive freight return to Asia due to the necessity of the shippers to return containers for this destination. In countries like the United States, this logistics option is widely used for the shipping of c.500,000 TEU of soy a year.

According to the commercial director of Tecon Rio Grande, Thierry Rios, the project of attracting new cargoes will be realized within a quite realistic expectation of a flow of success. "The market is heated and we can collaborate for the run of this crop, offering a logistics solution that is attractive for all players," he concluded.

Rio Grande container terminal starts operating new equipment
Company invested $ 7.5 million in the acquisition of the six RTGs used in the movement of containers in the yard
The Tecon Rio Grande container terminal in the Port of Rio Grande (RS) administered by Wilson Sons Group, this week starts the operation of their newest equipment. Altogether, there are six Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGs) cranes used in the movement of containers in the yard, the result of an investment of $ 7.5 million. The first four were inaugurated on Wednesday (8) and the other two begin to operate on Thursday (9).
The equipment was ordered in late 2011 from the Chinese company ZPMC, the same manufacturer of portainers used in the terminal, and arrived at Tecon in April.
Among the advantages of the new equipment are the better use of the patio area, since the RTGs will permit the reduction of the width of the corridors between containers and increase the height of each pile, and increased agility in the movement of the loads. In addition, there will be reduction in diesel consumption and emission of greenhouse gases, since the six RTGs replace 18 reach stackers, which did the work previously.

Porto do Rio Grande passa a operar 24 horas por dia de forma permanente
O porto do Rio Grande começou nesta segunda-feira a operar 24 horas por dia de forma definitiva, depois de três dias atuando desta forma em caráter experimental. Port of Rio Grande will operate 24 hours a day permanently
The Port of Rio Grande began on Monday to operate 24 hours a day permanently, after three days acting this way experimentally. According to the superintendent of the Port of Rio Grande, Dirceu Lopes, this occurred with a great effort from all the agencies involved and the possibility in the future to acquire the necessary amount of personnel for the authorizing agencies, will be more easy and efficient.
The superintendent explained that the port always worked 24 hours a day, but teams of control and supervision by the authorizing agencies - the Federal Police, IRS, International Agricultural Surveillance System (Vigiagro) and National Agency for Sanitary Surveillance (ANVISA) - always acted during night shifts. The cargo arriving at the port after 18h were released into the call or the next day.
The difficulty encountered refers to the amount of personnel available to the authorizing agencies. According to Lopes, these agencies have had to make relocation of regional personnel to work 24 hours a day. "The measure must be accompanied by a public tender by these organs," he noted. He estimates that for the operation of the port 24 hours efficiently and without causing excessive work, it is necessary to place over 100 agents in these organs.
The superintendent of the Port believes that having the organs in permanent activity will bring more agility and speed to port activities. As for the cost savings for the owner and the owner of the cargo, he prefers to wait 30/60 days to see if there will be and how much it will be. "Only the full implementation of the policy of 24 hours will determine how good the change is, but it is necessary to quantify," said Lopes.
The Program Port 24h, to which the port of Rio Grande was integrated, is a tool that will be part of the Logistics Intelligence System, developed by the Secretary of Ports (SEP) to reduce the bureaucracy in the port system, and will integrate the actions of the PortWithoutPaper, Smart Load and VTMS. The implementation of these systems are part of the bill and investment in the Accelerated Growth Program (PAC) of R $ 800 million.
On April 22, the new system came into force in the ports of Santos, Rio de Janeiro and Vitoria. Now, in the port of Rio Grande, and also begun in Suape, Paranagua, Itajai and Fortaleza.

With the completion of investments of R $ 180 million and the opening of a pier dedicated to cabotage, Container Terminal Salvador - administered by Wilson Sons Group - wants to attract cargo of rice produced in the South by the waterway.
Market studies show that more than half of the rice from the South destined for the North and Northeast is by the highway. However, the coastal transportation path has increased. Only the first quarter of 2012 to the same period this year, there was a 22% increase in rice cabotage operations in Tecon Salvador. The goal is to maintain growth in product movement and achieve a mark of 25% per year.
Rice is one of the most significant segments of cabotage terminal, representing 24% of all movement and 40% of landfills. Last year, 180,000 tonnes of the product  were handled . Largely served to fuel the gondolas of the state of Bahia.
In addition to more sustainable and less risk of damage and loss, the modal can provide savings in logistics costs up to 30%. Considering only the freight to haul a load of 30 kg of rice of Rio Grande do Sul to Salvador by road costs are around R$7.50, and coastal fall to R$6.40. A difference of almost 15%.

Brazilian workers prepare to strike
The workers, represented by Forza Sindical, which groups 45 member unions, staged a series of mini strikes in mid February over the government's plans to privatise Brazil's ports that were announced in December 2012. The strikes, which the Brazilian government said were illegal, ground to a halt after the government agreed to enter negotiations and suspend a heavy fine which was imposed against the workers.
The 6 hour mini strikes supposedly cost the Port of Santos, one of Brazil's largest ports, R$60m (US$30.3m). The workers' new plan for a 24 hour strike next week is thought to have arisen after a lack of progress was made with negotiations.
According to the unions, the port workers are concerned that the privatisation of the ports will lead to fewer jobs and lower wages. Currently, they are employed through a centralised labour control board which helps to maintain wages and benefits but, with the new legislation, the need for the board would be eliminated.
The government says the new 'Logistics Investment Program for Ports' aims to encourage better management and infrastructure of Brazilian ports.
The waiting time to load vessels at the Port of Santos and the Port of Paranagua is already thought to be 50 to 60 days.
As the largest importer of soybeans, China is already said to have switched its business, buying from US ports in order to avoid the lengthy Brazilian delays.

I'm pleased to find that I am not the only investor here.
And comfortable with 10-15 years which I would not consider rlt.

The WSON management are very forward looking and yes, perhaps full benefits in 5+ years but already the signs can be seen in little things (as mentioned above)and the market can be forward looking.

Re #801 - I have not only been following but am invested and have spoken to management at the last few OCN AGMs. The problem is that, according to management, it is likely to take 5 years until the benefits of the massive investment being made really bear fruit, in terms of rising profits.

Not all that surprising: major infrastructure programmes take a long time to complete, especially when you have to deal with Brazilian bureaucracy. ;0)

This is an investment for those with a really long time horizon.
