From the old TV series Kung-Fu

'Master Po: Close your eyes. What do you hear?
Young Caine: I hear the water, I hear the birds.
Po: Do you hear your own heartbeat?
Caine: No.
Po: Do you hear the grasshopper which is at your feet?
Caine: Old man, how is it that you hear these things?
Po: Young man, how is it that you do not?[5]'

The moral 'glasshopper optomistic' is do not relinquish your hold on a straw. It may blow away in the wind.

Apparently yesterday's rise was due to a recommendation from Cazenove, according to the Times. Takeover rumours always come up a couple of times a year with NWG. One day they may be right.

M&A matchmaking
Posted by Neil Hume on Feb 02 10:23.
There's been an outbreak of fantasy M&A this Wednesday morning.

Credit Suisse reckons Anheuser-Busch InBev should respond to the continuing ills of the US domestic beer market by making a blockbuster bid for SABMiller:

We believe the continuing ills of the US domestic beer market – faltering brands, shrinking per capita consumption, competition from wine and spirits – may force ABI's hand to make another acquisition after the cost cutting is complete and the company's balance sheet has deleveraged post the BUD transaction. In this scenario, we think SABMiller would be the most natural merger partner as SAB would provide strong management talent and a robust EM footprint.
Additionally, the decision to sell SAB would not be complicated by the emotional needs of a controlling group and the relatively small regulatory overlap could be solved with divestitures to willing JV partners in the US and China. We estimate the value of SABMiller at $71 billion (2800p per share), a 38% premium versus the current price; we estimate an SAB acquisition could be 17% accretive to ABI post $13 billion in disposals and projected synergies of $2.1 billion.
And JPMorgan is touting Northumbrian Water, which is 26 per cent owned by a Canadian pension fund, as a possible takeover target on account of its lowly valuation:

NWG's shares are the worst performing shares in the European Utilities index year to date with a negative TSR of 10.6%, underperforming the SX6P by 16.4%. Although there has been sub sector rotation out of UK water into the larger European integrated utilities, NWG has been the worst affected. NWG shares have underperformed the UK water index by 4.8% over the last month and 12.0% over the last 3 months.
In our view, NWG's shares are fundamentally attractive due to its: (i) leverage to high RPI (ii) 5 year EPS CAGR of 6.4%, the highest among the pure play water companies (iii) RPI + 3% dividend growth commitment to March 2015, with the highest dividend cover 2.0x of any of the water companies and (iv) relatively small EV (£4bn), which in our view, makes it a likelier takeover candidate.
And FT Alphaville can add another name to the list - Centrica.

Got to go back to Aug 07 to get a volume higher than todays (7.2 mill), that's a lot of interest in NWG that has been falling back for 3 months.
Hope the gain holds tomorrow.

A lot of interest this morning. Volume high at 4.3 million. The highest since last February when it was 5.7 million for the full day.

Certainly is. I think the recent fall was due to uncertainty about the effects on the business of the impact of the slowdown/recession on the North East and the effects of public sector job cuts, as there are relatively more public sector workers in the north. Looks like the interim statement has given some reassurance.

Bailed out of this one on 19/11 at £3.461 - beginning to look tempting again but think I may just back off for a few days until this downward trend starts to correct itself - looking at £3.15ish

Click "Financials" at the top of this page. You'll find the the yield on the page displayed. SVT has a higher yield and presently has some upward momentum - which NWG does not!

Bought a few more this morning. Volume quite good today although the share price didn't move much.
Had a closer look at the eps numbers in the interims over the weekend which are distorted a bit by deferred taxation adjustments (favourable). This is a bit of a windfall for the P&L but looks set to continue as the corporation tax rate for NWG is going to fall further. As far as I'm concerned its going to be money in the Bank leaving less pressure on making money via the water pipes. All grist to the mill.

The analysts in this sector are even worse than in retail. Those results looked pretty resonable to me and my gut feeling is to add on weakness. Stochastics look good tonight and BritishBulls.com are waiting for a Buy confimation. Looks like a buy for traders and long term.

Well that "upgrade" was really positive wasn't it? I read this morning that the latest thing for the analysts to fret about is that the disproportionate number of public sector workers in the North East losing their jobs due to government cutbacks could impact on NWG's profits. Really, pessism must be a prerequisite of the job.
