Investor's Chronicle re-iterates its "Buy" recommendation on the back of the results

I think that maybe the release of the results today surprised some people, as they were expected "mid December"

Well, there we are, results out. I haven't had a chance to go through them in detail yet, but at first glance they look pretty decent to me.

We must be about a week or so away from results now...

Edit: No, now only 1 day away!

More on the sheik, if you're interested...

Thanks Irenekent - will look out for that article. I suppose that NBL will give an update in the results due in Mid-December too.

According to the FT this weekend it seems that our sheik has been taken to court by Baldwins, Bonhams and Sotheby's and four other unnamed auctioneers who have obtained a world asset freezing injunction against him. He appears to owe almost £20m to Baldwins and others in connection with the Prospero collection as well as £4.3m to Bonhams and £42m to Sotheby's. Doesn't look as though we are going to get our money back any time soon.

Not much detail in the article except description of a couple of very expensive coins. Still, it should pique some interest.

Investors Chronicle has an article on coin investing today ("Historic coins in demand"), although it contains no explicit mention of NBL or AVR that I can see.

I suspect that some people hold this stock as a proxy for coins and stamps etcetera. Given the US Presidential result, economic Armageddon has been postponed.

Bit of a fall today-nothing good likely until the Qatari coughs up. I think he is in a bit of trouble on a number of fronts. Hopefully his brethren will cough up to save face, but don't count on it. Obviously the coins can be sold again but it all takes time and money. Maybe the vendors will accept bids from the under bidders. Here's hoping.

I was getting all excited, thinking that the Finals should be out around now. Then I read the trading update which says that they're out mid-December. D'oh!

Wonder how Noble are doing with the GBP 2.2m they're owed by that Qatari investor?! Or indeed the mooted rationalisation of the websites. Not much sign of that so far.

Thanks for the BRR_Media link - very interesting listening. I liked the intention to rationalise the 3 websites (Noble, Baldwins, Apex) - this makes sense to me, as they do seem like disparate entities at the moment, and presumably some cost savings can be achieved in the long run, as well as improving cross-selling opportunities for collectors of both stamps and coins, and improving the coin auction and e-tail facilities.

A brief note in City AM today - doesn't say anything new though:

Since Baldwin's retain the coins, it is profit delayed rather than lost. They can sell them to another buyer. There may well be trouble with the tax authorities who will probably want them to pay tax on non existent profits and delay recognising the write off. Lying is what tax authorities do these days. They probably took lessons from an investment banker.

I agree they are a buy.

Aside from the reluctance of the Qatari bidder to cough up, I thought that the update was generally positive. This could be a good opportunity to top up...?

(I would, if I had any spare cash lying around the place)

Quite an interesting news release on the Bentley auction here, in case anyone missed it. The Bentley Collection so far has realised £2.25 million, although it says there's a final Bentley auction next year:-

Having watched some of the recent auctions live online I get the definite impression that sales have been very disappointing. Like the correspondents above it is very difficult unless you are a collector, to assess the income to the auction house and whether it is more or less than expectation.
Since that sensational auction success earlier I get the impression that it has lead to an enthusiasm among sellers and a dearth of serious buyers. If that is the case, then the reasons for the hike to a 200p share price probably do not apply any more. However, the real situation is unclear and I reserve judgement until we hear from the company. It is about time for that to happen.

I'm not a collector either (not coins, anyway), so not sure how estimates are worked out - whether they're an accurate "market price", or a bit of estate agent blag.

I do collect stamps, and know as far as SGI goes, their auction prices (and their prices generally) are way above what you find on the online auction sites like Ebay. Having said that, the quality is usually that bit better too, and I'm sure the same goes for NBL/Baldwins.

Agree about the site being a bit confusing; you can't easily tell how many lots went unsold (apart from looking for gaps in the lot numbers), and there's no overall total for the whole auction - or at least not that I could see.

Still useful though to get a feel for how the auction went...

Do the published estimates reflect genuine expectations or are they like an estate agent's come on? I don't actually collect myself so am unaware of the conventions.

It is a fascinating site if a bit confusing since it does not obviously let you know that you are at a subsidiary of Noble Investments.
