"Of the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500 only defensive plays such as consumer staples, telecom, real estate and utilities ended the session in positive territory."

So perhaps tomorrow NG will fall less than the rest of my dogs.

And to be honest to say the ftse was up so much today and how far these have fallen, not impressed with todays small rise, will feel much better if they break 790 recent resistance.

...only trouble is that the Dow has been playing it's usual trick since the London close, although for once NGG showed some defensive quality against that backdrop!

Looked at Penn. Don't fancy it. Yes, ng good value now. No need to relist to move tax domicility elsewhere but I don't think the media will let Corbyn win anyway. Fears are overblown imho. It's also years away. One chap told me was thinking of buying a home overseas just in case he got in today. I guess you are never too old to emigrate. No fool like...an old fool

574k share buy back today fulfills the 23,346,344 share buy back started on 14/2/18. The influence,if any, of 834,000 average shares per day buys has now expired

The FTSE hit 6930 in 1999, 19 years later it's lower than that today.

A fantastic extended bull run. Not.

I hold for the yield. Short term falls are frustrating, but irrelevant.

Jonnycsh1 I wholeheartedly agree with you on this I have NG.as my largest holding but my requirements are for income with a safety hedge built in this is providing me with a decent growing income and in the fullness of time value will out.
I Invest in utilities for their growing income ng.is not alone on this PNN is even more affected by this worry on interest rate rises why I would ask when their borrowing is mostly at fixed rates.
Check out pnn with 4 waste units being commissioned this year profit growth will eclipse last years 30% from the waste side we will always need water and waste disposal.

At the moment the majority all want to be growth investors and the old ways of looking for value are currently not fashionable. The old school way of investing...crunching numbers over sector and against projected earnings to find value will soon reassert itself...then stocks like this will start to move. Aware that a bear market is just around the corner I am happy to buy this and wait for the market to deal some very hard lessons to the new school post 2008, who have never seen a bear market. That is a problem because 2008 was ten years ago now. In the city, that's a whole generation, literally, so in fairness it's no wonder that value investing is not a popular notion anymore. I think this is good value under 800p and a good dividend and great cash pile etc..etc..but then I am in this for the long term now. In 4 years we will see over 20% in dividends. What's not to like.

National Grid was initiated at 'buy' at Societe Generale - and the market took no notice.

My thoughts are
Where else can you get a yield of 5.9% which increases with RPI and the dividend is covered by earnings plus the majority of the earnings will come from the US in the future as much investment is being funneled there

UtyINV - what about buying with the intention of selling after a very short period? Would that not be equally wrong? The short sell is matched by a buy. Whether the sellers or the buyers are right only time will tell. Often the short sellers have judged the company correctly, e.g. Carillion. I have been buying shares since 1968 and have lost money plenty of times but never due to short sellers. Only due to my own wrong decisions.
