Berry and Rudd are having their winter sale.

Bought some Margaux at £ 15.95 .

and St Chinian at £ 7.85 ........ both reduced.

First time I've bought from this illustrious co. rather out of my price range usually.

Let you know when they've arrived !

Moet also £25 a bottle and another 25% off for 6 :-)

I've tried nearly all of the Undiscovered's reds up to the £12 mark, and they've generally restored my faith in claret - very good value. I've just ordered the Christmas Clarets case which looks ok and with a saving of £28 - just over £7 a bottle. Added another 6 bottles to get the free delivery, including the Adam fizz from Alsace, but unfortunately not Fleur Morange or the Mathilde.

Btw,I can't resist their Grand Cru Classe Case of six offer for £130 - I bought a couple of bottles of La Fleur Morange 2003 some time ago and saved one - it's very nice.

Yes I've had a case of that myself, very drinkable and cracking value imo. Have you tried the Jean Baptiste Audy Cuvee,Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon ? I've been drinking them for more than two years now - think we're on the 2013 now - eveyone I know who's tried them liked them and can't believe it's just six and half quid a bottle.

I'm rather partial to Undiscovered's Domaine de Bouchet ....... if you like 'big' wines 14.5 % and a bargain at £ 6.99.

The best vintages were absent - 2005/2009/2011;

Not sure if this is a typo napolean 14th, but 2011 was average - 2010 however, was a cracking vintage right up there with 2005

There's a couple of really good mixed case deals at Bordeaux Undiscovered at the moment - the Bordeaux Christmas case and the Christmas Clarets case both contain some really good value reds (averaging between six and half and seven quid a bottle). I've tried them all regularly and think they're all very decent - can't find anything nearly as good in the supermarkets, even at £12 and more a bottle. Delivery is free if you spend over a hundred quid and it;s a really good service - I haven't bothered with Calais for three or four years now. Anyone happy to spend a bit more could do worse than try their Paulliac at about £20 a bottle, the Pessan at about £15 and Chateau Chantemerle 2011 at £12 are cracking value imo.

Well, chat about MJW brought one hard fact home to me.....

Buy your wine in Calais!

I wandered round to "Géant Casino" yesterday for the "Salon des Vins" - the annual wine special offers.
I already have a good & rather full cellar so didn't rush in on Sept 8th. However, I'll get some more AOC Ventoux for 27€/12 = 2.25€/bot, drink in 5 years.

Also bought:
AOC Cotes du Rhône 33.90€/12 = 2.825€/bot, drink now
AOC Alsace Riesling 19.6€/6 = 3.23€/bot, drink now
AOC Médoc - Ch Larose-Trintaudon 2011 MAGNUMS; 3 for 53.7€ = 17.9e ea, drink 2020 on (a favourite of mine, good value, adds to current stock drinking now & later)
AOC Hautes Côtes de Beaune 2013 MAGNUMS; 3 for 45.9€ = 15.3€ ea, drink 2018 on.
They also have a great selection of malt whiskies, mainly singles, from 22€ to 158€/bot. I opted for Aberfeldy @ 22€, Talisker Skye @ 25.5€ & Talisker Storm @ 30.3€.

I passed on Champaigne, as Spanish Shampoo like Frexinet Black Label at 4.15€/bot & not much different, if at all, from Champagne. Still, a good deal for Brits due to duty on sparkling wines.

Most French supermarket chains do these, but I found Casino's offer was way better than the rest.

The "Salon des Vins" are always early Sept. Too bad for this year, but you could do worse than plan a trip next year for some big hootch buy-in at discounted French prices...

hxxps://catalogue.casino.fr/0915SalondesvinsS37_HM/t5/

P.S. Biggest interest is cheaper wines (Under 10€) for Brits, as the duty differential is a big factor.
The best vintages were absent - 2005/2009/2011; that's supermarkets for you, & always has been.
If you want exceptional wines & best vintages at trade prices (some in bond which saves 20% at time of purchase), go to Christie & Sotheby auctions!

Voila; probably the best tip you'll get from me on a 12 month view until 2016!

Nothing wrong with that!
Aussie PNs can be a bit harsh at the price point. I normally stick with the NZ ones.
When it's on offer at £4.50 (2 for £12 and 25% off) which it often is , this one from Sainsbury is drinkable. Not great , but drinkable.

Hi bd, it's a Fairbank PN 2014 Australian. 13.5%.

Commended in 2015 IWC. I think it came from Sains. Partner bought it.

It has improved with opening. And had a little cheddar alongside.

The Barefoot Merlot[Asda] is cheap as chips, but far easier on the palate.

Neither are as nice as the 2014 Carmenere from Mont Gras. [Coop&Waitrose]

[btw, no I don't spend all my spare time in the wine section of various supermarkets!]

There's no way a 2014 PN should be dry and it's only going to get more dry with age. Obviously , letting it breath will soften it a little and I really don't want to suggest adding anything to sweeten it up unless as a last resort.
Where's it from? Old world I presume.

bd, Some smaller places are happy for you to byo.

What do I do to make an over-dry 2014 Pinot Noir more quaffable?

Too true.
To be fair , there's nothing wrong with downing a £15-£20 bottle at home. The problem is that when you go out you get a £4-£5 bottle for the same money. I can't drink that and I'm certainly not forking out £80 for a decent bottle to share.

25% off six selected wines at Ocado. Nothing to bother with apart from some of the more expensive ones like Mcrae Wood or Bin 28.

A lot of those are just plain idiots, but I don't think there is any problem putting a cheap Red in the Fridge in this hot weather - in fact I'd much rather drink a Cold Red than a Hot one! As for a White I find it awful drinking anything but chilled!

Save your good Reds for the cooler climes!

And Sangria probably breaks many of those Rules but is a very nice drink on a Hot day!

25% off 6 bottles at Morrisons, ends this weekend I believe. The Jacob's Creek Chardonnay is lovely (works out at £4 a bottle at the moment), as is their own Sancerre.

To nibble with it, I usually get some of their jumbo prawns and marinade them in ginger, garlic, salt, pepper, fresh parsley and loads of lemon juice.

Yum.
