27/11/2001 08:35 | LONDON (SHARECAST) - Software developer Merant today warned that high-value sales are slowing and it expects an interim loss of up to £5m. It has delayed posting results because of reporting complexities associated with the disposal of several businesses. MRN - Merant Latest Prices Name Price % Buy/Sell Merant 89 -7 Software & Computer Services -0% Data supplied by nothing-ventured.com The results, originally due for release today, will now be published no later than Wednesday December 5. Merant said it operates in a "challenging economic environment" and remains cautious about the second half. But it has little to worry about on the cash front, as it expects to have funds of £87.7m at the end of the first half. And that is before the £18.3m sale of DataDirect in November. For the six months to October 31, Merant expects to report sales of £44.7m from its continuing operations. That is a decrease of 2% from the £45.6m for the first half of last year. Second-quarter sales from continuing operations were down slightly at £22.3m, against the £22.4m reported in the first quarter. Merant expects second-quarter operating losses of between £2.3m to £2.8m from continuing operations, excluding goodwill and exceptionals. It will face one-time severance charges of £2.3m. As a result, Merant should make a six-month operating loss of between £4.3m to £5m, excluding goodwill and exceptionals. Merant said it continues to make good progress with its restructuring. It received £37.6m for the sale of Micro Focus in August and an extra £10.8m from the sale of real estate in Newbury. It has a new president and chief executive, Gerry Perkel, and has relocated its operational headquarters to Oregon. DataDirect and Micro Focus will be treated as discontinued operations in Merant's interims. This means that Merant has had to restate its profit and loss account, something it said it could not complete within its normal reporting period. Merant reports its financial statements under UK GAAP and US GAAP, which treat business disposals differently. It also delayed its first-quarter results because it needed to restate its accounts following an acquisition. Consensus forecasts published before today were for a full-year tax profit of £8.08m on sales of £141m. That would give earnings per share of 5.22p, putting Merant on a prospective price/earnings ratio of 18.3. At 95.5p, Merant is capitalised at £137.21m. It has a net asset value of 89.21p a share. 26/11/2001 17:18 | Choice of MA can obviously effect the message from the chart. I use 10 and 40 which (using daily price quotes) show an uptrend starting recently. However if you use 50 and 200 on daily prices there is what looks like a golden cross in July (which came to nothing) and a dead cross at the end of October! I hope that's wrong - I'm holding on. | bigbertie
26/11/2001 16:57 | Well I did my bit today and bought 8,000 but nothing seems to have happened. | bigbertie
23/11/2001 21:44 | Drsmessguide What do u base your statement of a sell off next mont? Tea leaves at the bottom of a cup? Also, most things sold off after september 11th not just MRN Regards. | badtimings
23/11/2001 21:28 | This one has been undervalued for months, however, it is very volatile and likely to sell off rapidly on the next dip. I bought at 68p in September and sold in the 90s. Hope to pick it up on the big selloff in the next month or so when it will be a serious bargain. Stay defensive the market will plummet in the next month or so and offer oppertunities not seen in a decade. | drsmessguide

23/11/2001 18:24 | General ignorance I think. MRN did get itself a bit of a duff name and I think that has stuck, meaning a lot refuse to look at it. On guy I know on another BB said he had strict orders with his broker never to let him buy it again :-) Another said that anyone going into MRN were bonkers and would be broke in no time :-) I challenged him saying they have £100m in the bank, make a profit and are giving £50m+ back to investors so why would they go broke? He couldn't answer. I think that is it, general bigotted attitudes to a stock that has done them wrong in the past so they miss the transformation into something new. Wasn't aware that Techinvest had tipped them - 180p too - that's interesting - consensus as to the minimum value. Looks like I'm not being bullish enough in my old age saying 30% undervalued :-) Should have said equityinvestigator tipped them to go to 180p short term too. All looking quite exciting. That 500K trade at the end was @ 95p. That could have been a buy from earlier in the day. If it was a sell then the MM's paid a penny over the bid for 500K as the bid sat @ 94p all day. Why did they do that in what at the time looked like a weak market? | cockneyrebel
23/11/2001 16:51 | Tipped on Bloomberg by equityinvestigator.c That's quite a brave statement when the price sits at 98p - the girl must be confident. Makes my estimate of 30% undervalued look a bit low - they are looking for 90% rise - short term. This girl talks my language :-) D | cockneyrebel |
