A supermarket chain dubbed the “Russian Lidl” is opening its first stores in the UK this summer - and claims to be cheaper than any other store.

Svetofor, which was founded in Siberia but trades under Mere in Europe, says it costs up to 30 per cent less than other budget shops like Aldi.

The Russian chain has 3,200 stores internationally and opened its first European Mere store in 2018.

Speaking to trade magazine The Grocer, Pavels Antonovs said Mere prices will undercut even the cheapest supermarkets.

“Our model is no service and no marketing.” Each store in the UK will have just 8 staff, counting a director, four cashiers and three delivery workers.

Mere stores are expected to double up as warehouses, with images from other sites across Europe showing items displayed on palettes.

Suppliers are also expected to deliver straight to the shops, which will each be about 10,000 sq ft.

Morrisons confirms controversial change to every single supermarket starting next week

Supermarket giant Morrisons has announced a major change will be rolled out in every single supermarket in the UK next week.

Any shoppers who have a Morrisons More card will be affected.

Under the current scheme, customers get five points for every £1 spent - with 5,000 points worth a £5 voucher at the supermarket.

But this will stop from May 10 - meaning the final day to collect points is May 9 - thanks to a huge overhaul of its loyalty club.

Instead of getting points, shoppers will receive digital coupons via its Morrisons More app that can be used for instant savings in stores.

The supermarket says these will be personalised, so they should be based on what you usually buy in stores

the private equity owners of asda were able to borrow almost £4bn at 3.3% interest to fund their bid. they also sold and leased back the distribution centres for proceeds of £0.95bn. asda has about £9bn of freehold property if the media are to be believed. morrisons has property in the books at £5.8bn, with a much higher %age freehold than asda. now that the space race is over, capital is being used to pay down debt and this is making it more and more likely it will be taken over. there is also a very substantial manufacturing business that could be sold.

this is a play on UK property, and even if there is no takeover, i think this is a very low risk 6-7% yielding share with excellent asset backing that is in huge demand from the institutions.

Vennells was ordained in the Church of England as a priest in 2006.

In the FT story on today's resignations someone in the comments section has wondered about her views on Luke 19.8: ”And‭ Zacchaeus‭ stood‭‭, and said‭‭ unto‭ the Lord‭; Behold‭‭, Lord‭, the half‭ of my‭ goods‭‭ I give‭‭ to the poor‭; and‭ if‭‭ I have taken‭‭ any thing‭ from any man‭ by false accusation‭237;, I restore‭‭; ‭him‭ fourfold‭."

In addition to Amazon opening their new 'hair-care' salon in London this week...

Morrisons has become the first UK supermarket to launch an own-brand range of shampoo and conditioner bars.

The products will be in their permanent hair care range.

Part of the Nutmeg range, they can last up to 30 washes and cost just £3 - making them five times cheaper than some other branded options available, which can cost over £15.

They are also vegan, 100 per cent plastic-free and packaged in fully recyclable cardboard cartons.

Managed to get a limit order buy today @178. Looking at these as a good long term hold. Expect Amazon to take these over within several years but in the meantime I'll enjoy picking up a decent yield along the way.

There is another graph from the same Which survey, for a larger basket more typical of a weekly shop that’s shows Morrison’s much cheaper than Tesco.
