Despite broker reratings into the mid 600s last week, MLC continues to attract good support this morning, now up over 750p on reasonable buying.

I bought in on Friday at 736p for a short term punt, level 2 looks to be doing well with good buy volume coming in, 134K buys against 62K sells and the share price at 754.0-754.5p 1-1.

I think that they have further to go yet.

Tempus in The Times today thinks these should be worth up to £17 a share...

Bout time that this thread was reactivated especially after a 50% rise in the share price over the past 6 months.

Could MLC become an acquisition target ?

M&C sees London revPAR drop 25% in April

Hotelier Millennium & Copthorne has seen revPAR from its six London properties crash by 25% in April following a Q1 revPAR drop of 11%.
M&C is issuing quarterly updates to the City in response to a similar change ordered by the Singapore Stock Exchange where M&C's primary listing is held.
The 25% drop in London revPAR contributes to a group shortfall in April of 26%: New York is –23%, and its SARS-affected Asian operations are 52% shy. While the first two weeks of May have seen an improvement in the US business, Asia is reliant on 'the containment of SARS' to spur recovery.
The quarter's trading was hit by the build-up to the Iraq conflict, with SARS having a fortnight's-worth of effect. For the three months to end-March, group revPAR was 5% shy of last time. However, at 21 Feb this was only 2% down.
The quarterly figures for London show that occupancy was kept above 75% but with average rate 5% down on the previous quarter. M&C said that it was 'continuing with its policy of making tactical price reductions rather than wholesale cuts'.
Elsewhere in Europe, 'the German hotel market shows no sign of recovery.' Its two German hotels – in Stuttgart and Hannover – made an operating loss of £0.6m. Its Millennium hotel in Paris however lifted occupancy resulting in revPAR being 3% ahead.
For the quarter, overall group figures show an operating profit of £9.6m on turnover of £125.1m. For the same quarter in 2001 turnover of £135.6m brought an operating profit of £18.5m. In pretax terms this quarters' £4.7m gain compares with last time's £7.6m.

nidge64, you mention that the company offers decent shareholder perks. I currently have a substantial amount of short interest on this stock, do you think I would qualify?

:-)

It looked very weak today with chunky sells, I think it is going lower.

Thanks Nidge64, I haven't looked at AHT so far. Will add them to my watch list as well. It could be 6 - 12 months before we see any movement on MLC. Had also wondered about supermarkets but I think that one has already had such a good rise. Doing quite nicely with Persimmon (PSN) but I think they may be getting near the top so now looking for other avenues for recovery. Just off to read the Rank thread.

See you, Seymour.

Think you're right to be careful, Seymour, not sure about food and drinks though. I hate to look like a ramper, but the kind of story that I think is interesting in the present climate is that of Ashtead Group (AHT). I think they actually stand to benefit from US companies tightening their belts and hiring machinery rather than buying it.

There should be time to get into MLC at a good level, once we've had genuine signs of an upturn. Meanwhile they'll probably stay in the doldrums and could be in for a profit warning or two. One positive point is that I think they have some shareholder perks - reductions on rooms and the like.

Cheers,
Nidge

Good point Nidge64. Perhaps drinks / foods might be a better spec - I'm watching these and people like Allied Domecq. Not sure which to put my money into. I do think that long term MLC will bounce back but thed elastic is probably too floppy for a quick bounce!!!

Seymour.
