Incredible, just look at the contrast in views:

Berenberg reiterating SELL , target 375p - June 8th
Barclays overweight tp 575p - June 15th

So, what's changed over a week? The information set available to both is the same. At the end of day it all boils down to taking a view, and who's opinion is more reliable? Pick a card.

International revenue to support Merlin through decline in UK visitors...

Neil Wilson, senior market analyst at ETX Capital, said the warning about visitor numbers in the UK this year is "not encouraging, but it is worth noting Merlin is only about a third of the way through a planned global expansion of Legoland".

"The Japan site opened in April and with plans for further expansion in Asia and US (a site in South Korea is planned, while it is exploring options for sites in China and New York, too) there ought to be considerable new revenue streams coming in the longer term that investors who are worried about terror threats to the UK business in the near-term may want to look more closely at.”

FT:

Analysts are predicting Merlin’s underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation will come to £499m in 2017, following the £433m recorded last year.

However, Simon French, analyst at Cenkos, said he expected earnings estimates “to edge down slightly to reflect the comments in the trading update”.

Ahead of next weeks AGM statement.....Panmure...

BE
The AGM statement traditionally has no numbers but we expect YTD trading to be in line with management expectations. The trend of improving inbound visitations to Merlin’s London attractions should be holding, given strong hotel RevPAR/air traffic data and robust airport concession performance from the likes of SSP Group/The Restaurant Group. Terrorism concern remains elevated across gateaway cities (and the Drayton Manor tragedy may have taken the shine off UK performance) but Merlin’s portfolio is well diversified (greater than 70% profits ex-UK) and 2017 expectations feel well set as peak trading approaches, for £306m PBT. Share price strength has continued and Merlin’s valuation now (rightly) sits towards the top of the peer group, trading on 12.8x 2017 EV/EBITDA.

Merlin is undervalued, says Barclays

Alton Towers owner Merlin Entertainments (MERL) may not look cheap but Barclays believes there is a lot that is being undervalued.

Analyst Vicki Stern reiterated her ‘overweight’ recommendation and target price of 575p on the stock following a roadshow. The shares were trading flat at 502p at the time of writing.

‘One of the questions posed on the last roadshow we hosted with management was: ‘What is the market missing?’. With the stock trading at 22x 2017 price/earnings, one might argue “not much”, but in fact we think there is a lot that is being underestimated/undervalued,’ she said.

While Stern said the stock was ‘unlikely to ever look “cheap” on a one-year price/earnings given its growth characteristics’ there was more potential for the company thanks to an accommodation rollout, which she said was ‘potentially the most under-appreciated piece of the story’.

Re Drayton Manor tragedy...

Merlin Entertainments said similar rides at its Thorpe Park, Alton Towers and Legoland Windsor parks were all being closed until full details of this week’s incident become available.

A spokesman said: “We are aware of the tragic events at Drayton Manor and our thoughts are with the family and all of those affected.

“Safety is our number one priority. We have full confidence in the safety of all the rides we operate, but as a precautionary measure, rapid rides at relevant parks will be closed until more details of the incident become available.”
