16/6/2019 17:27 | Production of demonstrators for Wing of Tomorrow (WoT) programme Manufacturing of composite components represents step change in aerospace industry Investment in partnership with ATI, supporting technology work within the UK HVM Catapult research network and GKN Aerospace’s global technology centre in Bristol UK GKN Aerospace announced today, at the Paris Air show, that it has manufactured the first demonstrator wing components for Airbus’ ”Wing of tomorrow” research programme. The parts are samples of a section of the wing spar. GKN Aerospace’s wing technology will significantly improve the productivity of the composite manufacturing process. The use of composite components can result in up to 20% weight savings on large commercial aircraft. GKN Aerospace uses its long term experience and in-depth knowledge of wing trailing edges and advanced composite technology to accelerate the development of new composite assembly automation technologies for wing primary structures. GKN Aerospace is a long term technology leader in composite wing components. For Airbus the company manufactures the A380’s fixed trailing edge and the wing leading edges for A380, A330 and A400M. For the A350 XWB GKN Aerospace developed and now supplies the 27m long rear wing spar and the inboard and outboard flaps (including skins, spars, ribs and leading edges). John Pritchard, CEO, Aerostructures and Systems Europe and Asia of GKN Aerospace explains: “The manufacturing of the first composite demonstrators under the WoT programme is a true milestone. We are proud to be a partner of Airbus in the WoT research programme. The demand for lighter, stronger and low maintenance composite wing structures seamlessly fit our sustainability goals. The Aerospace Technology Institute is providing vital support for the UK’s position on the next generation of aircraft.” | brexitplus

15/6/2019 18:30 | The worst feature of the South of England is the quality of the air, although I must say it is much improved from the time I lived there in the 70s. These days, I have to visit London a few times each year and on stepping out of Euston Station I'm met with what I can only describe as a pungent and putrid atmosphere. It's as if the whole population of London, all 12 million people, and the animal population therein, had broken wind simultaneously. Not pleasant. | meanwhile
15/6/2019 16:32 | GKN AT PARIS AIR SHOW “GKN Aerospace expects to grow the defence side of its business in the coming years through new opportunities and the ramp-up of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter programme. Speaking ahead of the Paris Airshow, company CEO Hans Büthker said that the current military-to-civilian balance within the company of 29% and 71% respectively, will change in the near-future in favour of the military, as the F-35 programme (for which GKN is the sole-supplier of the canopy and other parts) and other programmes pick-up. "We expect to see more defence growth for the company - it would be a good thing to do," Büthker said, noting that it is the anticipated ramp-up to full-rate production of the F-35 over the coming years in particular that will drive this growth. Besides GKN's F-35 work (it also provides titanium structures, composites, exotic metals, and anti-icing protection for the fifth-generation combat aircraft), the company also has significant technologies on other military platforms such as the Boeing F-15 Eagle, Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, Eurofighter Typhoon and Saab Gripen combat aircraft (canopies and other items), Airbus Defence and Space A400M airlifter (metals and composites), Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules transport aircraft (engine nacelles), Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion heavy-lift helicopter (aft fuselage), and several Airbus Helicopters rotorcraft (fuel tanks). Further to these established and publicised programmes Büthker hinted at other more classified projects, saying that GKN was working on "undisclosed platforms" in the US. In 2016 it was revealed that GKN had been contracted to work on the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider long-range strike bomber; it is this project that Büthker was likely referring to.” | brexitplus
15/6/2019 09:38 | How has Jo Brand got away with her acid comment?? Far worse than Danny Baker incident. I'm not going to renew my BBC licence next year. | gettingrichslow
15/6/2019 08:12 | Tournesol Am reading Boris's book on Churchill at the moment. Its very good. I've read all the big biographies. Agreed Johnson not Churchill, but I can see some similarities. Jackdaw I know Barnsley in the Cotswolds. The hotel was once Rosemary Verey's house - the gardener - her husband was an architect. The pub does attract celebrities - Liz Hurley used to be a regular. | brexitplus
14/6/2019 17:57 | Getting Lovely part of the world I have friends in Ampney Crucis and we dine in Cirencester and a strange place called Barnsley mixing with the great and and the good. I did have a business in Barnsley near Sheffield, solid people but not many great and and good and far removed from the former. Met the chap with the HEDGE a few times , said it needs cutting. | jackdaw4243

13/6/2019 19:53 | Getting Although we live in a beautiful small village we too are close to great towns to live, namely Cheltenham, Cirencester, Tetbury and Clifton in a Bristol. Great pubs, theatres, restaurants, shops and transport links. Wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, particularly Wales. | brexitplus
13/6/2019 18:24 | According to the Halifax Quality of Life report, 38 of the top 50 best places to live in England are in the South. 18 of the Top 20! Number one is Hart. Closely followed by the Mole Valley, Winchester, the Chilterns, West Kent etc etc. Where I live is really terrible. It's packed full of smart shops and restaurants. Pubs are opening not closing down (3 new ones last year including a fantastic micropub). Crime rate is one of the lowest in the country. Great schools abound. Almost zero unemployment. Strong community spirit with all manner of fetes, parades, food and drink festivals etc etc. Brand new hospital and two brand new schools. Really terrible. Meanwhile, can you send me some information on big detached houses in Wrexham please - I can't stand it here anymore and I want to move to Wales. 😂😂 | gettingrichslow
13/6/2019 10:07 | Good luck in Belgium, Minerve. Other news :- The Kansas City Stack - Available from 12th to 25th June. Two beef burgers, bacon, smoky cheese and crispy onions, all with a smoky steakhouse sauce. Go for it. Make a day of it in North Wales. Visit McDonald's, then hike the hills, follow the sheep trails, bathe in the crystal clear mountain streams. | meanwhile
13/6/2019 00:25 | Yeah its going to be bedlam. Might not get enough avocados in for a few weeks. Tesco might run out of my favourite quilted toilet roll for a few days. Complete chaos. Get a grip Porky you snowflake. Good job you weren't between age 16 and 35 in 1939! | gettingrichslow
12/6/2019 23:07 | I've negotiated 18 months rent on a nice place in Belgium. I will probably spend most of the following months out there. Watch the chaos from afar. Good luck folks. | minerve 2
12/6/2019 23:04 | Brexidiots have already killed our auto-industry. You are the weakest link good bye! LOL Bet they are really smug in Sunderland, Swindon, Bridgend etc.. Nothing to do with Brexit, of course, nothing to do with Brexit. Who are they kidding. Christmas is really going to be sweet for those families with no presents near the tree. That is YOUR FAULT folks. You carry blame. How does that feel? Smart move.........NOT! | minerve 2
12/6/2019 22:29 | You lost Porky. Get over it. Move on and stop your endless moaning. We'll be better off in the long run. | gettingrichslow
12/6/2019 21:52 | Millions of us don’t see any need for Brexit. Why should we have to show any grit? You are the sad deluded morons who are intent on this pathetic fantasy. | minerve 2
12/6/2019 20:40 | Jackdaw, I agree. If Boris loses the Conservatives lose. Like Churchill in 1940, who wasn’t trusted by the establishment but was the people’s choice, Johnson is in the same category. If he wins he needs a really good team. If I was him I’d include JRM and Farage in my team. Keep his enemies close. Also great the Labour motion defeated. Bercow must have been distraught. | brexitplus
12/6/2019 16:48 | Boris did a good presentation much to my surprise, as a paid up member I may change my mind, as somehow as much as I like him I cant see Jeremy Hunt winning an election. | jackdaw4243 |
