Medical Solutions cuts costs
Companies: MLS
22/08/2007

Imminent interims from Medical Solutions should confirm the bombed-out diagnostic group's progress in the direction of profitability.

Fully listed Medical – which found it hard to make money with its original imaging technology for remote pathology reporting and lost £2.3 million last year – is sitting on £14 million cash following the £16 million sale of its pathology services joint venture in Dubai. Managing director Nick Ash, former finance chief at Humberside-based Eastern Airlines, joined Medical to pull off that sale and is now focused on exploiting new openings (in cervical cancer screening and other areas) helped by the recent £3.9 million acquisition of Cambridge-headquartered, profitable genomics specialist Geneservice.

The company has also become the exclusive UK distributor of US group Genomic Health's Oncotype DXC breast cancer assay. Medical Solutions has a five-year contract with the National Health Service for its cytology cancer screening service, which it expects to contribute £4 million to turnover this year.

Ash describes cytology as the 'cash cow' of the company. He says the next step is cost-efficient 'semi-automatic guided screening', which Medical is pioneering at Nottingham City Hospital.

Medical can now provide gene mutation tests for cancer, argues Ash. He contends that it is able to offer pharmaceutical companies a 'one-stop shop' for new product testing in this field at the pre-clinical trial and phase 1 testing stages.

Broker Nomura sees the company eliminating annual losses by 2010. The shares, which traded at 96p six years ago, now languish at 6.75p, valuing the company at £13.75 million, and offer a recovery gamble for the risk-friendly investor.

Although substantial cash in the bank, this comapny managed to burn through far more in the last 5 years and so without profits the share will not move outside of that trading range. Too much bad news in the past needs significant amounts of good new to move this share. I personally do not see a great deal of movement until the year end results early next year, and provided that they finally show profits.

Last director`s purchase was significant on 4th July,namely 828557 shares at 8p .
The market has been turbulent since then so no great surprise at quoted current price of 7p to buy.Notice a deal today at 6.75p. Recent news has been restricted in detail - perhaps reflecting that MLS is not an AIM stock.

Perhaps the market is waiting to see how the new strategy pans out and whether the company can turn a profit. I agree this look cheap but need to see positive eps and cash flow or the cash in the bank will slip away.

Are the mls threads dead now except for the recent rambling of the deranged?

What do we estimate the current cash balance to be cf market cap and does anyone have an idea of the size of the latest RNS in terms of turnover?

I am confused as to why we've been up and down in this 6-8p range for so long when i understand 1. there is cash in the bank, 2. reasonable aquisitions, 3. continued success of lbc and minimal impact relating to hpv vaccines for ages.

Any thoughts guys?

Hmm , So the Market hasn't been falling big style lately thanks to those "Yankee Doodle Dandies" as usual ? ... Lol

Looks like it's a case of waiting till everyone has had their two weeks holidays then ? Normally Mid July till Mid September in Uk is always subject to Low Trading Levels think we all know that ? Which of course can effect prices generally ?

If i'm not mistaken didn't a lot of the MLS Management recently "Buy" around the 7p level before the Results "Close Period" comes into effect perhaps ?

Think the MLS share price as held up quite well recently considering how the market in general as been ?

I give it two weeks from today to hit a low; but what the price is I do not know;
Two weeks because today is the start of the Holidays for Europe all worker i.e Factories everything either close or on skeleton staff levels; So if the market is going to fall it will be in this period; MLS MAY or MAY not follow suite;

Good luck if you are holding

Its crazy but very true
