Sad, but unavoidable suspension in my view. My biggest ever investing mistake, but I managed to sell down nearly all my shares and am left with £1,000 worth. It is always easy to blame the management when this happens, but they really should be ashamed of themselves. No doubt they will blame the economic climate etc, but the reality is that poor decisions were made from the start of trading. Mr Simon Bentley has a large loan to the company and I am sorry to say that I hope he does not receive this back. I attended an AGM and was told by him that his debt was subordinated to all other debt, so that should be the case. My concern is that we will see a convenient pre-pack so management can benefit from their mistakes.

Powerleague agrees to £42m takeover

The five-a-side football operator Powerleague has agreed to a £42.5m takeover offer from its biggest shareholder. Its executive chairman, Claude Littner – a former colleague of Lord Sugar who appears in The Apprentice – stands to make £2.6m from the deal.

The former Amstrad and Tottenham Hotspur chief executive led a management buyout of Powerleague from the investment group 3i in 2003, and owns 6.1 per cent.

The company, which has 43 football centres, has recommended the offer from Patron Sports Leisure, a subsidiary of the European investment firm Patron Capital, which owns 29 per

Crucially, the Chairman has been prepared to support the company with his own money where necessary.

The last 3 summer months of trading sound good, if only they would tell us the figures!

Unaudited Interim Results for the six months ended 30 June 2009

Maypole Group plc, the AIM quoted UK countryside hotels with restaurants group, is pleased to announce its half year results for the six months ended 30 June 2009.

Highlights:

Group sales, on a like for like basis, increased by 5% to £2,569,000 (2008: £2,448,000)

Operating profit increased to £140,000 (2008: loss of £119,000)

Loss before tax reduced to £364,000 (2008: loss of £507,000)

Net cash generated from operating activities £202,000 (2008: £464,000 used by operating activities)

The Group is benefiting from cost cutting measures taken in 2008

Trading over the Summer months, since the period end, has exceeded management expectations

Simon Bentley, Chairman of Maypole commented:

'After a difficult second half last year, we are pleased that management actions to improve performance have led to an increase in like for like sales and a return to operating profit with operating expenses tightly controlled. Against a background of a very testing market, trading since the period end has exceeded our expectations but we remain cautious given the current climate. The Group has agreed the terms of a re-financing with its existing bankers, Clydesdale Bank plc and this will be formalised in the very near future.'
