Satisfactory update from City Pub Group today. It is continuing to buy, develop and open pubs. It's even opening a vegan pub! This industry is not moribund - there are opportunities for good operators.

Yes I should have clarified. I meant the wider market. Nothing stock specific

Only in the macro-economic sense if the whole market reacts one way or the other. At the operational level, I can't see that Brexit will have any impact at all of the UK pub market.

I think the way the Brexit process plays out will have a big impact on whether this retraces or not.

I'm going. Bit annoyed it's been moved earlier and the token cost saving measure. Means an overnight in a £35 'hotel'. I plan to go to Burton and visit the Marstons brewery there on the Tues afternoon, then go to Banks Park Brewery on the Wednesday after the AGM. Few questions I want to raise. 1) What is the dividend policy? It was 'progressive' in the interim results, flat for the year and the full year results made no reference to the current policy. 2) When is the CW acquisition due to start being EPS positive? 3) Previous presentations stated further growth pipeline had 2019 as an acquisition year - is that still on the cards, if so what type of assets and how would they be preferably funded. Welcome other suggested questions...

I've decided to go the AGM on the 23rd.

I note this year it is at 10:30 and there will be no bar lunch. How disappointing.

It would be good to meet anyone else who is going.

We get a trade update around about the 23rd of this month I've been in contact with a Mars manger who I know and he was 16 % up on last year Christmas trade
he stated that most of his fellow managers was also showing good % gains over last year 2017/2018

HL prices go a bit haywire for about half an hour after the market close. Check now and I think you'll find it's back at 102.

yep, MAB, GBK and stonegate group all had great sales over xmas.

This must be good for the MARS brewing business if nothing else!

MAB results today are excellent.
This must be good for the sector including MARS.

The market seems to be waking up to the fact that if people aren't buying cars or spending it in the high street they must be spending it somewhere else. Booze and food!

I think it's likely we'll retrace, along with the wider market, given the likelihood of Brexit rumbling on and the continued mess that Parliament are making over it. Nice to see some sentiment and positivity in the sector though

The placing gave rights to a divi of a couple of pence the next day. I agree with your sentiment though and it suggests to me value is between today's and the placing price. CW acquisition seems to have been destructive for eps and therefore shareholders. We don't have the counterfactual but CW lower margin has been cited as a reason for 2018 eps being lower than 2017. Let's see if 90s are seen again shortly or if heading back to 110p.

Philoosh, In May 2017 city institutions paid £1.37p per share at the placing to fund the purchase of the Charles Wells brewery. Overall debt is a concern to the market but institutions must have taken that into account when taking up the placing shares. What is a fair price is anyone's guess but in the light of that placing price, my guess would be somewhere between 1.30 and 1.40p I support Marston's "localism" theme because the beers produced by the local breweries are excellent quality and have a good reputation. If a serious economic downturn appears then the loyalty of the regular customers in the small, provincial pubs will be important to maintaining a reasonable turnover for this company.
