From the media...about time...

One of Britain's best-known retailers says Britain's tax system should be radically changed to stop online companies having "an unfair advantage", and being subsidised by the taxes of their rivals.

Justin King, former chief executive of Sainsbury's, has called for business rates to be halved, with the lost revenue replaced by a 2% increase in VAT.

He says those changes would not increase shop prices, but would mean companies such as Amazon paying a fairer share of tax.

Mks has failed to stay above 300p comfortably...hope not but me thinks Mks could be making new lows over the coming weeks months...hope for the best on a takeover or a merger with another retailer..

Well
My wife shops in Marks Food Hall but this is a first. ...

In the 20 odd years we have been together has never bought any clothes.
Today , saw a coat and "had to have it" and then a pair of trousers in
a colour that she thought was stunning
Well done Marks !

Even I bought a pair of shorts

Store looked really good and plenty of space between the aisles.

Very impressed

The Daily Mail says, "Although this base rate rise will give would-be savers more of an incentive to actually save, this will also detract day-to-day retail spend."

I think that's rubbish!

As in previous rate rise the savings rates did not go up by quarter %, infact some banks have even lowered their current account int rates and I heard on BBC R4 before, savers won't see much of a rise this time either, due to banks can still get their hands on cheap money, so sadly for savers, banks have no need to increase saving rates much.

Although, the rate rise should strengthen the £ = cheaper imports and as most of M&S clothes are imported = more profit. ;o)

Rates rise is a further blow to retailers

Today's rates rise is likely to be coupled with a UK retail slowdown, warns Paul Martin, UK head of retail at KPMG.

'Whilst large parts of the retail sector have recently benefited from a welcome summer boost, consumer confidence still remains volatile, if not subdued overall.

'Once the warm weather and holiday season pass, it is very likely that we will experience a further slowdown of retail performance, as the impact of the latest base rate rise starts to filter down into consumer spend in the autumn.

'Although this base rate rise will give would-be savers more of an incentive to actually save, this will also detract day-to-day retail spend. Consumer credit is now set to become pricier, whilst other outlays like mortgages will also have a knock-on effect on what shoppers have left to spend.'
