Simply food is at premium price due extra cost of running a small store.

Traditionally a food hall was a food section within a larger M&S carrying a larger selection of food, and a simply food was a stand alone small site food only. eg petrol stations, motorway services and very small high street food only shops ( similar to Sainsburys local).. the lines are becoming a little blurred as some of the food only stores are now larger than the smallest food halls within the M&S shops...as ever it depends on demand and customer profile.ie those with the highest disposable income will get the bigger stores with the greater range

Retail Vision analyst John Ibbotson said: "M&S's humiliating withdrawal from 10 overseas markets is... a Dunkirk moment for [the] iconic British brand."

Investors were unsure about M&S's results and store closure plans, with shares initially rising before falling back in early trading.

Analysts at Liberum said they had "wanted to see radical action from M&S", but that they saw Mr Rowe's plans as "'medium' radical".

Of the UK plans, Matthew Hopkinson, a director at the Local Data Company, said: "M&S's store closures whilst not significant statistically will have a big impact for the towns where they have been the High Street anchor for many years."

Steve Rowe said in the R4 interview today, they are not increasing prices in the new year, they have negotiated with the suppliers and sourcing new suppliers to keep prices down.

It's the only place really you can get decent quality ladies underwear, everywhere else just doesn't last and it ain't much cheaper, more competition in men's these days as for outer clothing, the quality is there and some nice styles this year, personally last years looked dated all imho dyor

With all the publicity over M&S clothing, then I think many more shoppers (both old & new to M&S) will visit M&S to check out the new range.

From the results:

"Shareholder returns

We have continued to improve our investment disciplines and remain committed to a strong balance sheet and maintaining an investment grade credit rating. We are announcing an unchanged interim dividend of 6.8p today."

So if they continue to improve investment disciplines and remain committed to a strong balance sheet, which I'm sure they will, then no problem with next years divi imo.

This cost cutting is going to take a long haul...Christmas trading is going to be key...anybody think divi could come under pressure?...they have maintained it this time as a PR stunt but questionable next year...

Steve Rowe was interviewed on R4 before, he sounded very confident.

I heard on R4 yesterday the request for listeners to send them an email on 'what would you change at M&S' for the 'You & Yours' program today.
