UK snubs Apple-Google coronavirus app API, insists on British control of data, promises to protect privacy

The NHS has been keen to stress that it will protect people’s privacy despite effectively granting itself real-time location tracking.

The lingering question is what involvement, if any, LSAI has with this project.

Private sector races to build virus apps to track employees

Assuming Location Sciences doesn't get involved in the UK Govt/NHS initiative, there is still going to be ample opportunity for it to help out in the commercial sector. Almost every enterprise is now trying to think of how it can safely permit its workforce to return to the office.

While governments and tech companies are working on voluntary tools that send out alerts, these may not be widely adopted. By contrast, companies could make their tools mandatory as a condition for returning to work.

New platform to be rolled out at end of April (RNS 23/3) and working with partners and approaching Government directly on C19 (RNS 9/4). So expect update from Mark next week.

I must admit that I do find all of this tracking tech a bit sinister. I am happy to invest as its definitely the future barring some miracle but that aside, Im actually contemplating getting rid of my mobile, as the lockdown has made me appreciate the silence. Each to their own I suppose but Im happy for you lot to still be tracked mwah hah hah 😉

The NHS had been hoping tracking restrictions imposed by Apple and Google would be lifted for Covid-19 contact-tracing apps. Not so, and this is going to prevent the NHS from obtaining useful information about population flows in the aggregate, tracking “near misses” or receiving information about contacts from people who have opted into the system but not recently checked their phones.

The question therefore is can LSAI's location technology and considerable knowhow overcome this problem with its 'Insights' and/or 'Verify' offerings? Basically augment Apple's and Google's solution? If so, bingo!

Health select committee hearing about potential further 6 waves of CV before full vaccine roll out. Mobile solutions and contact tracing very big part of solution. For this to work location tracking needs to be very accurate and reliable - enter Verify dyor!

In a pandemic civil liberties may have to be suspended. Given this, there are now signs that the UK and EU are prepared to relax personal data protection laws in favour of the public's health and safety, as long as appropriate safeguards are in place.

As we know, smartphone users are constantly sharing their location information, often unknowingly, through apps. Of course spurious data is also making its way into the market place, all of which is shared with advertisers, data collection companies and other third-party groups. In turn this is being fed to governments and health officials, possibly without verification.

Location Sciences really needs to step up to the mark and make itself heard in these surreal times. If not, what is the point of employing Milk & Honey PR?

An added problem is that the powers that be have been totally inept in managing the crisis. The Government will have a lot to answer for once this is over.

Further details of the new NHS tracking app have been revealed and its obvioua they are not using any verification of location data.
Appalling that Mark Slade cannot even convince the powers that be during a crisis when it could be life or death, of the value of Verify.

As I suggested above this whole location tracking event is of limited duration.

The Company now needs to follow the example set by X-mode (one of its partners) and get goodwill recognition for sharing its data and skills for the greater good of human kind.

It is going to be interesting to see what contribution Location Sciences and partners can make to this initiative. The more I read about it the more sceptical I am about its long term success. So perhaps it is merely just a short term opportunity.

Come on LSAI - prove me wrong.
