For example - if someone was a political activist in Zimbabwe, opposed to Mugabe. He had been intimidated by the Zimbabwe authorities, perhaps arrested and beaten up. His house has been burnt down, and he has been warned that if he doesn't shut up him and his family will be killed. He arrives at Heathrow Airport and asks for political asylum. I would regard him as a genuine asylum seeker.

And I'd rather ten non-genuine asylum seekers get allowed into this country than one genuine ayslum seeker is sent back to their country and is tortured or executed. Besides those ten non-genuine asylum seekers would probably understand the value of hard work, and would make a valuable contribution to the UK's econony, unlike me, who at this moment is surfing the internet because I can't be bothered to do anything else.

People spoiling it for the few? If that's they way you want to put it. But genuine asylum seekers must be given the opportunity to establish their case, whatever the problems with the system.

This country has over the years looked after many asylum seekers. Many who went on to greater things,or darker things. The lottery it could be said is a money making machin for the government, and whats left is for politics to stay in power

People come to this country for many reasons. In Britain we give asylum to those who are fleeing from torture and persecution, for their religious and political beliefs. I'm not a lawyer, but as far I am aware this is the definition of a 'genuine asylum seeker'. Others come to this country for economic reasons, but they claim that they are genuine asylum seekers. The genuine asylum seeker often finds it difficult to establish his or her case, and there have been examples of individulals who have been deported from this country who have then been imprisoned, tortured or killed. It's therefore essential that such individuals are given proper legal representation throughout the appeals procedure. I know, it's a complicated matter, because you don't know if someone is a genuine asylum seeker unless you've first paid the lawyers and gone through the various procedures, and even then there might be mistakes. But as I said, I'm not a lawyer.

Charity beings at home? That's your view. I play the lottery, and I'd like my money to go to causes that wouldn't be popular with the average Mail reader. Personally, I would be delighted if my money could help a genuine asylum seeker demonstrate that he or she really was escaping from persecution and torture. And I'm sure only a very small amount of lottery money goes to the kind of 'politically correct' causes that the DM complains about.

goodbyee,

The Daily Mail is not a comic, or if it is a comic, it's one that Tony Blair reads when considering his policy decisons. It's arguably the most influential influential newspaper in the country, and I think you're quite wrong to dismiss it.

maha'; There is a move now I believe, for new lottery tickets to have a box for you to tick to say where you would like your money to go.
How many " ticks " in the British LEGION box and how many in the other ?????

But a lot of people would. And it's The Mail's ability to strike a cord with Middle England that makes it so successful. It's stories like the lottery grant ones that are part of this success. Perhaps they're on ZUKE's wavelength, and there are millions of people like ZUKE who keep reading the Mail and contribute to its profitability.

maha'; Fair comment,, don't have the copy to hand , but amongst the rejected were people like the British Legion etc..and among the accepted was to defend Asylum seekers rejected appeals against deportation.

You give no examples, no links, so how can you expect a sensible reply? Or do you naturally assume that everyone on ADVFN reads The Daily Mail? I have great respect for The Daily Mail as a business, I admire Paul Dacre's editorship, though by and large I don't like his politics, but I don't read the newspaper. Indeed I wouldn't be seen dead in a public place with a copy of The Daily Mail.
