The trades on these is interesting to far today.

A string of sells upto 575,000

And then a string of buys upto 200,000. (possibly bargin hunters at that price.)

Lets hope the latter continue.

This looks to be a liquidation of positions a la RPT last week.

Seems someone is either leaving the Ukraine or has margin calls elsewhere....

My own guess is that they will indeed sell forward more crop, not just maize, and may well do so before announcing the harvest results which conceivably would weaken their position in a market of excess supply in the domestic market (due to export taxes).

Do you think that as with rapeseed we will see more forward sales for maize in coming weeks perhaps bringing the forward sold element to 75% of the anticipated crop?

Delivery is beyond the October end to the FY, so profits won't be booked until next year (though of course the profits will still be made!) So my own estimates will have to come down. On the Edison note, they have total hectares harvested of 45k, against 52k planted. That looks far too pessimistic to me. They also have yields below what the company has already announced for wheat. But we will have a much better view next week when the wheat harvest is announced.

Landkom International PLC

30,000 tonnes of maize forward sold at $278 per tonne

Landkom International PLC (AIM: LKI, "Landkom" or "the Group"), the Ukrainian producer of agricultural commodities, has agreed its first forward sale and export of maize, selling 30,000 tonnes of its 2011 maize crop for an average of $278 per tonne, excluding VAT.

The sale was made through two contracts, one for 10,000 tonnes at $279 per tonne and one for 20,000 tonnes at $277 per tonne. Delivery terms are CPT Odessa during the months of November and December 2011.

The Group expects the price to be equivalent to $220 per tonne ex works, excluding VAT, after the deduction of broker commission, export tariffs, and delivery costs to the port.

The Group has now completed its rapeseed and winter wheat harvest, the results of which are due to be announced next week.

Vitaliy Skotsyk, Landkom's CEO said:

"These sales allow us to lock in good prices for what is expected to be approximately 50% of our total maize harvest. By exporting our crops we are able to take advantage of higher international prices and hedge foreign exchange risk to help achieve our growth targets."

Thanks for putting up the Edison note. My own figures are very similar, except that I have additional revenues of $15 mn! That reflects higher acreage harvested, and higher yields, and higher prices. I think their figures are horribly out of date.

Milling wheat dominates Ukraine wheat harvest, reaching 70%

Yes, I saw that. But the increase in input costs (for fertiliser, fuel etc) has already occurred, it is unaffected by the increase in crop yields. I don't expect the cost increases to be more than a few million $, which is not particularly material given the upward revisions to revenues. Incidentally, wheat, barley and OSR are harvested in July-August, of which LKI planted 35k ha (about 70% of total ha). After that the other key crop, maize (10k ha), is not harvested until October.

I haven't seen the detail of the Edison note. However, I don't see how it could have made up-to-date estimates of crop yields, when they keep getting upgraded all the time (by the Ukrainian authorities etc). I still think 3p eps for the year to October 2011 is perfectly achievable, equivalent to £13mn or $21 mn. That is based on a total harvest of over 205k tonnes (or 4 tonnes per ha), compared with 92k tonnes last year (3 tonnes per ha). And I suspect 205k tonnes is too cautious. However, grain prices are soft at the moment, and it could be there is downside risk there cos the bulk of the harvest won't be sold for some time.

a reminder of the southern harvest below

i guess the western update this week, only at 6p due to general market sell off...

Hybridan Small Cap ....Landkom International (LON:LKI 7.62p / £33.17m)The Ukrainian producer of agricultural commodities has completed the harvest in the Groups southern operations with dramatically improved yields. The winter barley yield for the south was up 110 per cent to 4.03 tonnes per hectare (ha) (2010: 1.9 tonnes per ha), with the winter wheat yield up 50 per cent to 3.23 tonnes per ha (2010: 2.2 tonnes per ha). The substantially improved yields were obtained due to more efficient harvesting equipment completing the harvest within the optimum time period.

In more export news, milling wheat is expected to dominate Ukraine's 2011 harvest with the share of milling wheat reaching 70 percent of new crops as of Aug 18, Ukraine's Farm Ministry said on Friday, while analysts and traders have expected a much smaller share of food wheat.
