In today's Guardian:

"Laird Group, which specialises in electromagnetic shielding products, closed 9p higher at 336p on talk of an imminent takeover approach.

By all accounts the speculation can be traced to a story doing the rounds in the Square Mile at the moment that a document outlining a cash offer for Laird was mislaid in a London restaurant, popular with celebrities, a couple of weeks ago."

Crikey - up 12p already.

Is this just buying in a thin market, I wonder?

Anyone else in here?

This looks an interesting situation, and results released on 15/3 seem to confirm that the restructuring undertaken recently is taking effect.

Earnings profile for the past and future 2 years look like this:

Current price= 347p

03 = 21.6p (A)
04 = 25.9p(A)
05 = 30p(E)
06 = 35p(E)

This represents growth of 15-20%pa , and seems to suggest the company is at least capable of getting onto the sector average rating of x14 at some stage over the next 1/2 years, with a possible resultant price of 500p.

Other factors favouring a rerating include a significant shift in production to low cost countries such as China and Eastern Europe, the possibility of further aquisitions to enhance earnings and a steadily rising dividend.

The trading statement back in December looked promising, and there appears to have been institutional buying. Results out very soon. Any opinions on this one ?

Here is the trading statement:-

TRADING UPDATE ON PROGRESS IN 2004

The Laird Group PLC ("Laird") today issues a Trading Update prior to the end of
its financial year on 31 December 2004.

Results for the year are expected to be in line with market estimates, giving
another year of strong earnings growth despite the adverse translation effects
of exchange rate movements and the impact of higher commodity prices.

In the second half of 2004 to date we have seen good underlying turnover growth
(at constant exchange rates and assuming acquisitions were owned for the whole
of the comparable periods) in both of our divisions compared with the same
period in 2003.

In Laird Technologies the market recovery has been maintained. Year on year
growth in the second half was in line with our expectations, although below that
seen in the first half of the year due to the timing of the recovery which began
during the second half of 2003.

The integration of Centurion is progressing as planned, and the projected
synergy cost savings announced at the time of the acquisition have been
reconfirmed. The business has met its targets in the period since its
acquisition on 5 October 2004. Centurion is in line to deliver year on year
growth in 2004 of over 20% in total turnover expressed in US Dollars. The number
of cellular handset antennae shipped in 2004 is expected to be approximately
140 million, almost 20% higher than in 2003.

In Laird Security Systems, our US business has continued to experience good
turnover growth. In the UK, the window hardware market has been weak, but this
has been more than compensated by buoyant turnover growth in other market
segments, particularly door hardware and composite doors. The integration
process following the acquisition of the Home Doors (GB) and Houseproud
businesses in September 2004 has proceeded according to plan with improved
deliveries and reduced costs.

In Laird Plastics, performance was as planned through to its divestment on
1 October 2004.

Since the Interim Results were announced on 3 August 2004, Laird has taken
further steps to strengthen its sound financial structure by completing a US
Private Placement for $140 million, of which $97 million runs to 2014 and
$43 million to 2016. These facilities add to the Group's #165 million of
bilateral facilities which run to July 2008 and its existing US Private
Placement loan notes totalling $61 million which expire at various dates through
2014.

Laird has announced today that Martin Rapp, President and CEO of Laird
Technologies, will join the Board on 1 January 2005 as an Executive Director.

Peter Hill, Chief Executive of Laird, said:

"Laird has made further significant progress during 2004. We have successfully
taken actions to reposition the Group further to higher growth markets in line
with our strategy, and have strengthened and developed our businesses. In our
Interim Report in August we stated that we intended to deliver another strong
performance in the second half of this year. We are well on track to achieve
this."

Today's results have clearly pleased regular watchers of Laird and the serious money is now rolling in. You can't beat good management for getting us to good value.

Something good appears to be coming when the results are announced tomorrow as there has been healthy and sizeable buying of LARD yesterday and this morning. A couple of sellers at 140p which is to be expected, but no doubting the momentum

dontknowitall,

In other words, not one to lose sleep over. Institutions been reducing lately but there are obviously buyers willing to take on the stock. I like it very much.
