Paul Hill at Equity Development points out that Kromek is well advanced on its US Department of Defence contract to develop a groundbreaking vehicle biological threat detector that rapidly detects any airborne pathogen used in germ warfare. Mr Hill understands that the “same first-of-its-kind science can also accurately and consistently recognise Covid-19” and could have “substantial benefits for many non-military applications, such as shopping centres, sports arenas, theme parks, schools, hospitals, offices, airplanes, and cruise ships”. This is certainly not being priced in, nor is the real possibility of additional ventilator orders. The shares offer 100 per cent upside to my 35p target price. Buy.

The ED research note also mentions that the biological threat detector project for the research arm of the US Dept of Defense is well advanced, and the same 1st-of-its-kind science can also accurately & consistently recognise COVID-19.

The opportunity
The current COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted that we are ill equipped to monitor and track the evolution of emergent pathogens, and we fail to be proactive in the management of outbreaks. Kromek is 18 months into a 5-year contract with the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the development of a mobile pathogen detection system, to detect biological threats, such as COVID-19. Kromek is looking for a full-time permanent Project Engineer to join the growing Biotechnology group. The Engineer will be immediately responsible for engineering hardware implementation. Working with the rest of the team, the Engineer will lead the design, development, manufacture and assessment of the automation hardware as well as owning all form factor and enclosure designs.

Bad news for the Science Group and bad news for the world, which probably won't now get Sagentia's planned low-cost ventilator. But good news for Kromek, which, with 2,000 ventilators to sell in rather short order will be comforted to see a formidable competitor removed...
