From Market Miscellany - Sunday Telegraph 12JAN 2003

Kiln looks hot

In May 2001 we tipped Kiln (98.5p), the Lloyd's of London insurer, at 74p. We argued that it was well placed to cash in on recovering premium rates.

The aftermath of the September 11 attacks led to one of the best environments for rising premiums in decades. Kiln, which runs five Lloyd's syndicates, raised £47m last year in a rights issue and will have new business capacity of more than £800m in 2003.

Kiln is also understood to have had a strong renewals season up to January with its syndicates gaining a 75 per cent rise in premium income, including substantial new business.

Given the recent strong renewals and the continuing possibility of a bid from WR Berkeley, the US insurer which upped its stake to 20 per cent in May, the shares have further to go. Keep buying.

Ursus,

How right you are! With two of you and one of me, that makes 3 of us that agree that Kiln is a nice little earner. Been in since 15.12.01 @ 56.5p, and think still more to come.

What a lovely sector this has been, it should still be going north for the next 12 months or so.

Now the search is on to find the next positive sector.

Any ideas?

results look good-no idea what expectations were but nice to see someone making lots of bucks. Would it make sense for Berkley to bid? I see they have just been invited on the board.

King Rat,

To me KIN had the patchiest results stream over 5 years of any of the ILV's.

It has been an impressive rise on KIN, which I have to say has really surprised me as well.

Are the Institutions now just taking a scattergun approach to piling into all the ILV's indescriminantly in the middle of Hurricane season in the Carribbean and South and East Coast USA?

No wonder people's pensions get so badly stuffed by these idiots in the city.

Cheers

Ashley

Cheers, ursus. I've never been entirely clear how Kiln acquired its good reputation. 510's results have been distinctly average over many years (although the last few years have been relatively good) and I keep hearing stories that they have some of the loosest underwriters in the market at the moment.

They are certainly valued at a high multiple of NTA relative to their peers, so it could be a good time to switch.

i'm guessing but suggest some or all of following - a more highly geared play that the others; high reputation of the synd's (eg i bet the cat synd is looking pretty good now; the berkeley involvement makes a bid possible; huge man agency profit shares expected for this yr; it got its funding organised earlier than some (at a ridiculously low level in my view.

ratty - i like the look of yr faves at the moment too and am thinking of some switching....

ursus,

Why do you think that Kiln have been so strong relative to most the other ILVs?
