The contract is consultancy - good, but not an engine for future growth.
I'm not tempted to add until there some explicit news on the software take up, G.

Also, I assume this was tipped in the IC again today. This is from an email I received (I don't subscribe):

"In today’s column, Simon Thompson reviews three small cap companies, all of which are expected to report bumper earnings growth, but trade on single digit forward PE ratios. One is...; the second is...; and the third is a software company that has just announced the third biggest contract in its history."

And still Kestrel adds. That's encouraging, but it would still be nice to see some of the executive directors buying or even Scott buying in his own capacity (rather than using OPM, other people's money). Sorely tempted to add here, but trying to resist.

Kestrel now owns nearly 13% of the company - are we sure it won't be taken out?

Last para, a veritable hit, SG!

APAD,

To answer your question you'd need to speak people who do refining. It's hard to judge whether capex budgets are frozen/cut across the whole energy spectrum. At least today's contract starts to prove up 2015's EPS forecast.

Tech Market View - 2/12/14:

KBC sees green shoots of recovery

KBC Advanced Technologies, the specialist provider of software and services to the hydrocarbon industry, has been awarded a $48.6 million contract (the third largest in the company’s history) with a South American oil and gas company.

KBC is already helping the client improve its plant performance and the two year contract extends the relationship until 2018. The contract vindicates the firm’s focus on growth markets, such as South America, and the restructuring programme that has been implemented in light of the company’s travails in 2012.

The contract is an extension to the Operational Excellence project and KBC will help the client to prepare to revamp its facilities both in terms of providing management support and operational readiness e.g. the safety of personnel in the facility.

However amidst the popping of champagne corks, management will remember that it was this region that adversely affected the firm in 2012 when changes in advance contract payments by a client led to cash reserves running low. The company needs to diversify its risks by winning equivalent contracts in other geographies; a reference contract such as this will help to do so.

Fairly jolly reaction to the rns. I expect the oil fallout to have an effect, but I don't see the refining business suffering - more likely to want more efficiency.
Or am I being simplistic?

Dasv, if you want to, you can often view old posts in the google cache, although you need to be quick before it is overwritten next time the google bot visits.

Yeah, it's been a turgid year after a great 2013. Too many swings and not enough roundabouts.

Likewise, Simon.
2014 hasn't been a stellar year for me, investment-wise -- looking forward to closing the books at the end of the month!

"I will wait for them to land some contracts that prove up 2015 and indicate Upstream action." This looks like the contract you were asking for, Simon, right on cue -- although no 'upstream action' yet.

Sorry to hear you have sold out -- understand why, of course, in this market. I'm still holding here, although it's been painful to watch over the last 6 months or so. Kestrel have been adding, the company has been buying back, and I still believe that the current oversupply in the oil market will tighten up over the next 3-6 months. I saw a Goldman forecast recently suggesting the same.

RNS - 2/12/14

$48.6 million Consulting contract award for an extension to the Operational Excellence project with a South American oil and gas company

KBC is pleased to announce a two year contract award from a South American oil and gas company. This contract constitutes an expansion and extension of an existing relationship. The contract will see KBC immediately expand its support to the refinery with a focus on providing operational readiness and management support for the upcoming revamping of its facilities. The focus of this support is to ensure both the effectiveness of the organisation in managing these activities and in ensuring the safety of personnel in the facility.

The contract is worth more than US$48.6 million to KBC over a 24 month period and extends the current contractual relationship to 2018. This represents a deepening of KBC's relationship with the client in its pursuit of Operational Excellence and is a direct reflection of the success the partnership has had to date in improving plant performance.

Ian Godden, Executive Chairman, commented, "This is the third largest award in the Company's history and gives us excellent revenue visibility into 2015 and beyond."

Kevin Smith, Managing Partner, Consulting, at KBC, added, "KBC has a unique combination of skillsets and supporting software that allows it to effectively drive improvements in production for its clients. This award reflects the client's continued trust in our ability to deliver on our commitments and is a direct result of the great work by the combined KBC/client team."

kbc tech commented on saudi oil minister visit to venezuela and mexico and also the closing of milford haven.

my comments from other inputs........

margin per barrel refined falling from about $3.3 to $1.3 over 12 months, approx.

pressure is on to manage refinery efficiency across whole value chain - in walk kbc.

will be bumpy but demand will be there for the s/w, services offered to avoid more refinery closures and claw back some margin to refiners.

interesting times.
