Beyond just lowering trade barriers between the countries, the deal also includes greater protection of intellectual property rights—a part of the deal the US fought for—and provisions to increase minimum labor standards for workers in participating countries.

The nonprofit Peterson International Institute for Economics estimates that the total GDP of participating countries will increase by about 1%, with the largest gains for Vietnam and Peru.

It covers 14% of the global economy and it was the centrepiece of President Barack Obama’s strategic pivot to Asia.'

What makes Merkel's comments particularly striking -- apart from her well-reported acrimony with Trump -- is, as @AliceFromQueens noted, Europe generally and Germany specifically have far less permissive free speech traditions than the US. Yet even Merkel finds this alarming.



A related reminder: during the Snowden reporting in 2013, Merkel called Obama, furious when it was revealed that the NSA had spied on her personal calls, and reminded him that she grew up in East Germany and explicitly compared NSA spying to the Stasi:

Recall a few being interested in a position I'd taken in Carnival Plc the luxury cruise line operator last summer.

Carnival continues to burn through $690m a MONTH while generating virtually ZERO revenue - having over 100 very expensive cruise ships laid up for the best part of a year and counting is extracting its toll.

Pleased to have taken a profit on the holding taken out during the summer as the next 12 months is likely to continue to be very challenging for the company and the wider aviation and holiday sector.
