Two for Switzerland - Interesting - have to confess I've never been there - probably because its land locked and we're not winter sports enthusiasts.

Ha very interesting!
Agree also about the delivery guy....politicians are not only aiming at him,
they are expecting him to spread the word about their various mantras and help to enforce their principles!

The US Constitution and Institutions of State helps the US to protect the US and the rest of the World from the worst excesses of a gung-ho President.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for much of the rest of the World.

After visiting more than 100 countries over the last 35 years, i consider myself extremely fortunate to have been born a British Citizen and brought up in the UK - there are still fewer than 5 countries i would seriously consider today as an alternative.

I think he delivers at my house as well

Any way the Dow at the moment is making a bear flag pattern now if it starts to drop from here expect a 3500 point drop quite rapidly.

But it could rise to around 26000 then drop 7000 points

Look at Bit coin chart you can see the same pattern

You have to smileOne of the couriers who deliver to us on occasion has a driver who seems to live for political issues. Woe betide anyone who stops to chat if they don't have the time!To describe his politics would depend on the day of the week. I guess "confused and bigoted" would cover most of his manifesto. He is so far right that often he is left. Though he consistently hates David Cameron and berates him for standing down but would, I am sure, have equally berated him had he not stood down and done the right thing. He wants all foreigners to go home because they take our jobs .........or was it they don't work......no, that was last week. He was behind Brexit to the hilt but now he blames Cameron for giving us a choice when we didn't know how complicated it was.He hates his job but when my wife recently suggested "why not find something else?" He said "it's not worth it, I would have to work too many hours". In some ways it's comical and no doubt there are plenty of politically minded people on this thread who can make well reasoned arguments for each side of any political divide but when a politician spouts half truths it is the parcel delivery guy they are talking to mostly. The person who believes what they want to believe and hear. They want a simple solution to a better life and when they find out that political solutions are never simple they get angry and they change their stance with amnesia. He doesn't like his life and he doesn't know how to change it but politicians prey on people like this.

I cannot help thinking the hue and cry generated over Aviva having decided to cancel some Irredeemable Preference Shares is just another example of modern society (in this case investors) wanting compensation for their own stupidity. If a clause in the documents says Aviva can cancel them then why should Aviva compensate for their ignorance?Nobody compensates investors of a stock which cancels its dividend no matter what financial hardship it may cause to the holder or even if 20 analysts had forecast the dividend would be paid.It seems to me Aviva have taught them a valuable investment lesson. Read the bloody document. If their adviser didn't tell them then that is a different matter but again Aviva is not the villain. I do not hold the stock but I hate this modern society approach of "if I create enough trouble for a firm they will pay me off even if I was at fault".

glad you like it, spitting/jt.

Jonathan is a real star. Met him a couple of times and he's a really nice, down to earth guy. Oh, and a phenomenal musician.

Check out his earlier albums - "Gentle Spirit" and "Fanfare"

Quite like it. You can tell the Pink Floyd influence. My favourite album purchase of 2017 was Leonard Cohen - You Want It DarkerI have tried to get into him for years but failed, preferring covers of his songs rather than the originals. Then he makes this one last record before he dies and I have been playing it to death! (no pun intended)https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1F0sEmPV2ig

"If it's between the Govt and the BOE, it's essentially the same thing isn't?"Don't ask that question Mr Roper! We with have the conspiracy theorists here in minutes. :-) .......search who owns the central banks on the internet.

agree, jt. Ultimately debasing the currency leads to Venezuela. With the BOE UK debt though, is anyone paying any interest on the debt? If it's between the Govt and the BOE, it's essentially the same thing isn't?

I'm going round in circles with it.

If only it were that simple Mr Roper. Print the money, cancel the debt and nobody owes anything. There is always a price. Germany in the 1920's, Zimbabwe 00's, Venezuela, or any one of these:https://object.cato.org/images/pubs/commentary/hanke-20080721-1.gif

thanks, jt/spitting, i'm not talking about cancellation or printing money though. Just wait til the bond matures and don't replace it. i.e reduce the size of the UK gilts on the BOE balance sheet, similar to what the Fed has stated it will do.

They could set a 5 year or 10 year program, to reduce the stock they own by 2-4bn a month.

Seems a bit strange to be putting all of the sweat on reducing the debt on the taxpaye via cuts/Tax rises when to my, admittedly, small brain, there looks to be a logical way to reduce the UK debt.
