just bought another 8000 cfds with nav at 350.7 and current buy price of 331 there is a bit of margin to be had, although i am not totally convinced all of the fall last night is in the nav-i am now holding 27500 shares which i reckon is a nice longer term holding for me.

Japan sees end to deflation curse
10th Jan 2006

Japan's finance minister has given an upbeat assessment of his country's economy, signalling that it may finally shake off deflation by the end of 2006.

Sadakazu Tanigaki said strong domestic demand and healthy corporate earnings were helping to revive the economy.

Speaking in New York, Mr Tanigaki added that Japan would probably "overcome deflation within this year".

The world's second-largest economy is slowly emerging from recession and years of falling consumer prices.

The country has been struggling to combat deflation, which hurts the economy by holding back demand as consumers put off buying goods in the expectation that prices will become cheaper.

I don't see the harm in diving in and out of any stock as long as the spreads
are reasonable. Japanese investment stocks rising in New York at the moment , consequently trading at a discount here in the U.K , so I have been diving in on anticipation of a rise tomorrow.

Cheers Nephin, but I do like to dive in and out where possible! As always with these type of forecasts, sometimes the price will continue to rise prior to a correction, or the sheer number of buyers may prevent it from happening. After all Japan has been touted far & wide as a star performer for this year. Good luck to yourself also.

As somebody has already said on this BB, the only thing that goes up in a straight line is Kate Moss.

I am quite sure that all Jap ITs will wobble a bit over the next few months, but so will everything else (well, not Kate perhaps)

ITs are a long term core holding not a dive in & out job.

Anyway good luck to you what ever you do.

If you get a minute have a look at NIIW - it looks very interesting if you're looking for an Indian play.

P.S.

Does anybody know if you can get a streaming quote on the Nikkei like the one that we get for the Dow?

orvil,

I switched my pension fund into Japan in August and also picked up a load of covered warrants - so have reaped some benefit already!!

As for a 5 year boom...well, some people are already predicting the economy will "top Izanagi."

(The period that concluded the 57 months of rapid economic growth that started in the mid-1960s was called the "Izanagi Boom," named after a deity in Japanese mythology who helped create the Japanese islands.)
However...many a slip etc. etc.

The Times January 04, 2006 Page 42 article is:

Japan's steel giants plan £3bn boost to capacity

Toyoto buying up a lot of the steel, plus a lot being exported. Toyoto now being reported as the largest car manufacturer in the world.

Have a look at page 42 in the Times today.

I haven't got time to re-run it here because I'm in the middle of plastering the spare bedroom, but its a very positive piece for us holders

PS Invesco Jap Dis has just woken up - I made enough money out of their warrants a few years ago to take Herself on a great holiday in Barritz!

She wants a cruise this time.

cmillar-remember we are coming out of a 15 year bear market-the prospects are at least a 5 year bull run-do not expect it all to be one way but you must be exposed to reap any benefit.

As soon as they start press advertising japan funds for your ISA is the time to wonder whether the run is coming to an end.

The word Japan seems to be all over the financial pages of the week-end press, one commentator even went as far as suggesting that Japan could be on the threshold of a 15 year bull run (yes please)

I know that we have heard it all b4 but I seriously think that 2006 will be the year of the Yen.

Here's hoping.

I agree Nephin-I have made 23% on this since 1.11.05 that is not pedestrian-the fund has been recently tipped as a good sector performer by hargreaves lansdown. I also have around 20% of portfolio in Japan and as my speculative investments come in during the year i will strategically move more into Japan on a 5year view.Happy New Year to all

I've got 20% of my portfolio in Japan now and I'm tempted to make it 40 in the New Year - the one thing that I like above all else about I.Ts is that they do not have profit warnings where the share price falls in half in one hit.

I know that a lot of people don't rate them because they say that they are too pedestrian - but are they? I don't think so.

Good luck for the New Year.

Not much to choose between JFJ and JPS performance over this year. Is JPS more restricted to smaller companies?
