NANO, that one still hurts - as did SIA at the time.

Everyone has their list of sucker stocks. My current one is LDG. Kept buying in due to the massive discount to NAV and a buy back. And yet a year later and the price is lower than when the buy back started and no sign of a rerating.

Unfortunately we all will make mistakes from time to time as that’s the nature or the game.

Sorry to see you took such a hit with ORCH BB2. What you state above is spot on. Even the best can't get it right every time. I hope you rebound in style and many of your other holdings work out extremely well for you.

From my side the bad memories are SIA (now PHAR), NANO and PRG (latter no longer in existence!).

Thanks David, yes I do hold so a welcome relief given ORCH which is my reason for posting as I’ve been asked what my current position is so felt I needed to answer. I no longer hold any shares in ORCH having sold the last few after the tender/delisting announcement.
It was my top holding so it’s been a major blow to the portfolio with a whooping loss of over 50% and 8% of the total portfolio and the biggest in £ terms since I started my investing career. It’s hard to know what to say other than I trusted this company too much in that even with the constant drift in the shares I believed the great yield which I deemed safe and the actual improved trading of the company would eventually see them rerate at some point. I made the classic mistake to continue adding on every dip to a point in which it totalled circa 20% of the portfolio. Foolish in hindsight especially as I’ve preached all eggs in one basket etc. It’s a case of trying to make up lost ground now and thankfully some other holdings are helping like CAU potential bid today and NBB. GTC is now my biggest holding so pleased to see it climbing from 5p a few months ago to 8.5p bid as of today. I’m not wanting to have another overly large position here that I regret but fingers crossed. I hope everyone else’s investments are performing well.
Unfortunately we all will make mistakes from time to time as that’s the nature or the game. I’m angry at myself as all the warnings and red flags were there but I choose to ignore them. Definitely a wake up call if not a good kick up the backside!!

To (New)Mark International Women's Day 2024, I would like to pay tribute to NWT's brilliant CEO Marie-Claire Dwek, and the stellar success she is achieving in a male-dominated industry.

Note that prior to her appointment as NWT's CEO, Marie-Claire had a marketing-investment background:-

And in the legendary tech stocks investment book "Super Stocks", marketing in its broad sense is highlighted as one of the very key factors that can make a super tech company:-

"Books I have read...
2018-03-21
Super Stocks by Kenneth L. Fisher

... If a company isn't good at marketing, it isn't good. A technology company that isn't good at marketing, isn't good at technology. A Super Company is competent (not necessarily perfect) at marketing.

Most of the variance in results boils down to finding what to develop in the first place. What should the product be like? How should it perform? Why will the customer prefer it over other alternatives? What is the motivation that generates the sale? These kinds of marketing factors determine up to 80 percent of the effectiveness of research. The other 20 percent varies with the capability of management. ...

Super Companies: The Business Aspects

... In their most abbreviated form, the business aspects of a Super Company must include:

1. Growth orientation: A burning desire in all senior personnel [...] for growth. This need manifest itself not only in growth markets but, more importantly, throughout the daily lives of the employees that make growth happen.

2. Marketing excellence: A broad understanding of changes in the nature of its market – at least as soon as the customer first perceives them – along with an organization capable of attaining and continuing to maintain customer satisfaction.

3. An unfair advantage: A competitive superiority over all current or potential competitors – usually being the lowest-cost producer – and/or having established a unique or semiproprietary position in at least a major portion of its product lines.

4. Creative personnel relations: A company "culture" that makes employees feel that they are treated with dignity, that they have been and will be offered fair promotion opportunities, and that they exist in an atmosphere where constructive ideas from subordinates are encouraged and financially rewarded.

5. The best in financial controls: Financial controls which learn quickly if results are not as planned. This must be coupled with a constant desire to seek continual creative evolutionary improvements in financial controls relative to the competition.

Marketing is an absolute key – perhaps the single most important aspect to success. More companies fail, or exist at a lackluster level, for lack of marketing excellence than for any other single reason. Superb marketing is so important because it satisfies one of business's only reasons for existence: its customers.

Marketing in its simplest and best form is helping people. And it is hard to do a good job if you don't understand them. This ability to understand the customer is what makes good marketing so unique. ..."

Note also that NWT is outstanding in all five of the key business attributes listed above.

Hi all hope you’re all keeping well. I hadn’t planned on posting but I’ve had quite a few messages and DM’s regarding ORCH so felt I needed to respond. It’s always nasty when your top holding issues a profits warning ⚠️ like ORCH has done today. Obviously the FCA are trying to reign in the greed with some brokers in selling GAP insurance and rightly so but while ORCH has 20% of its loans in GAP largely with one company which has decided not to offer GAP products it’s not a reflection on how ORCH is run. Unfortunately it will take time to reallocate those funds and as to what margins we just don’t know. I’ve confidence that Ravi will see us through this and hence I’m holding for now. Brokers state the dividend is safe and even though they’ve reduced forecasts ORCH will still remain a profitable company with EPS for 24 at 4.8p and for 25 at 3.2p. Not withstanding the risk that the FCA will rule on some other element I don’t see how ORCH will be liable for any fines etc and it’s even more unlikely that banks will pull funding. I’m sorry for everyone that hold’s including Cowie who posted above and I know saying this happens from time to time won’t help so let’s hope it’s a one off and we start to recover over the coming 12/18 months. Current discount to 24 NAV is circa 80% with brokers target price reduced from 62p to 45p I’m hopeful but as ever DYOR ETC. Good luck all, Over and out.

I’m not a poster much these days but I have to say Battlebus you will be sorely missed.
Over the years I have benefited from this thread and your stock picks and that of the many great posters. I echo what others have said that if the reasoning for hanging up your boots isn’t detrimental in nature I beg you to please reconsider.
If not enjoy whatever you do in the future.
