20/12/2004 16:26 | In the 2004 annual report the stated objective of JPS is... "Capital growth through investment in small and medium-sized Japanese companies." On the JPMF website currently it is... "Long-term capital growth through investment in small and medium-sized Japanese companies." According to TrustNet today, NAV performance figures are... 1-month -8.5% 3-month -9.9% 6-month -22.5% 1-year -3.9% 3-year +1.5% 5-year -73.4% The trust is seventh out of the seven Japan Smaller trusts over all of these periods except 3-months, where it is sixth. Long-term or any term, in no way can this performance be regarded as meeting the objectives. Yet in the interim report, Chairman Alan Clifton says "We shall continue to rigorously review the investment process and its timely application in our determination to see that at least satisfactory investment returns are delivered" Only "satisfactory"? Management fees are currently being charged at the rate of £1,480,000 p.a. Nice carrot, but where's the stick? Surely what is required here is some stronger disincentive for underperformance. | foster | |
