04/1/2011 11:09 | WOOD DEAL SIGNALS KNOCK ON EFFECT FOR OIL SECTOR The oil field services sector is always vulnerable to a wide range of risks. Tuesday January 4,2011 By Henk Potts Have your say(0) WOOD Group provides products and services to the oil and gas sectors globally. This includes engineering facilities for oil and gas customers, well support solutions for recovery and extraction, and gas turbine services. During December it announced it would buy PSN, an energy services provider, for $955million. PSN should be a good strategic fit and helps to maintain Wood Group's strategy of striking a balance between oil and gas development and later-cycle production support activities. It should also allow the group to expand geographically and should add to the group's cash flow and earnings. This has not been the only recent merger in the oil fields services sector, with the US firm GE also recently announcing its acquisition of Wellstream. These purchases are likely to improve investors' sentiment towards the oil fields services sector, with M&A reducing the number of investable names on the market. More M&A looks likely to be a key theme for 2011. We believe that 2010 will have been a trough year for oil field services firms and that growth in capital expenditure and contract awards will accelerate. Wood Group is already doing well, its shares have outperformed the overall UK market and the UK energy sector by more than 70 per cent and 80 per cent respectively, over the past 12 months, and we believe they have further to go. We have lifted our earnings forecasts for Wood Group to include the contribution from PSN from mid-2011. We reckon that a fair value for the firm would be 646p, which points to a total possible return of around 20 per cent from current levels. Remember that the oil field services sector is always vulnerable to a wide range of risks. Cost overruns or delays on individual projects can also impact earnings. The value of an investment here can certainly go down as well as up. HENK POTTS, investment analyst at Barclays Wealth, shares his knowledge. 09/12/2010 16:44 | Another contract HOUSTON, December 9, 2010 - Wood Group's Alliance Engineering has been selected by EPC contractor Daewoo Shipping and Marine Engineering (DSME) to provide jacket and topsides engineering and design for Chevron's South Nemba Auxiliary (SNX) project. The SNX project is located offshore West Africa in Angola's Nemba field, in water approximately 380 feet deep. The SNX project consists of an un-manned, four-pile jacket, multi-deck facility that will be bridge-connected to the SNA Platform. The SNX platform will include a flare boom, helideck, oil processing train, gas compression and dehydration equipment, electrical power generation, and other associated equipment. The oil processing train includes a 2-phase IP separator, a 3-phase LP separator and an oil degasser; compression equipment includes a surge gas compressor and an intermediate pressure (IP) compressor. "Alliance looks forward to working with DSME on the SNX project," said Edmund Lunde, president of Alliance. "Our experience and expertise in offshore structures and facilities design will be a great asset to Chevron on this important Angolan project, and we appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities once again. | beckaroo | |
