15/9/2018 14:27 | Ban all French and Italian wines and all those EU beers, The government should launch a Buy British Campaign to counteract the ones like in the Netherlands whose government is telling them not to buy British..Three cheers for Wetherspoons!!!! | johnwise
15/9/2018 10:55 | Mind you , with a pint starting around £2 , prepared to wait. | ignoble
15/9/2018 10:50 | My son and his chums often meet in the first Wetherspoons ever to be opened Still very popular and is always busy. Still a great pub but his complaint is it can take forever to be served or having to wait an age for food to be served. Doesn't stop him going though. Does seem that one of the few criticisms of Spoons is that staffing levels need improving. Would think it tough to get staff ... | ignoble
15/9/2018 10:41 | Very droll. | essentialinvestor
15/9/2018 10:03 | The idea of getting rid of quality Czech and German beers brewed under the Reinheitsgebot is to be applauded. I can't wait for my Budvar to be replaced by Carling black label brewed in blighty. | bionicdog
14/9/2018 23:04 | Hi standish, But Tim didn't actually mention any of those things. What he did say is that worker costs will rise and "the UK will require a considerable level of immigration over the next ten, twenty, thirty years in order to be a successful economy" The beer mat is quite clear and says that a 'no deal' brexit will mean lower prices. There are no ifs, no buts, no may bes and there are two side of the beer mat so plenty of room for any caveats. Now Tim appears to see other Brexit factors that will leave Wetherspoons either having to absorb more costs or pass them on to customers. So perhaps its just an act of omission? Perhaps Tim can be a bit less economic with the truth on his next beer mat print run. | maddox

14/9/2018 18:18 | Hi Maddox Tim's assertion is that any increase in prices will be the result of increased costs attributable to government policies e.g. Increase in minimum wage, employers NIC and Business Rates which would have nothing to do with Brexit. On the other hand he believes there would be plenty of scope to reduce prices if the UK traded under WTO rules after Brexit. | standish11
14/9/2018 16:07 | Hi standish, I'm just trying to understand how the benefits from Brexit that Tim sees are going to be passed onto his customers - IN HIGHER PRICES! I find that somewhat confusing ...or even misleading. Regards Maddox | maddox
14/9/2018 15:49 | Aye , I too enjoy "Spoons" (Could have put that better) But sin of sins , my nearest Wethersppons did not have any Black Pudding ! Still a good breakfast and good value. I will forgive them , lol | ignoble

14/9/2018 15:02 | Yes, the msm do deceive my implying max WTO tariffs. Think the rule is that if you give a rate to one, it has to be the same for all although Donald is trying to get away with that. Don't think many understand what EU external tariffs are. | dafrog
14/9/2018 14:32 | I don't warm to Tim's enthusiastic Brexit views, however very much admire his achievements in business. | essentialinvestor
14/9/2018 14:07 | Well said Standish . I'm guessing Maddox doesn't listen to every word that Tim says , or to the context . Tim is building a really good relationship with his employees and customers . A hands on man . I have met him in his pubs ; his managers love him and he is so rightly proud of his and his staffs achievements . How many town centres has he revived ? How many derelict buildings have been renovated ? . How many people have benefitted from his policy of making affordable meals available until 11, breakfasts available early ? , unlimited hot drinks ? . An App to get served at table in a pub ? .. how fantastic is that when it's busy for a single person ? . Well done Wetherspoons and Tim . . Today's results are good as well . | tonytaxi
14/9/2018 12:18 | Tim Martin's point was that with a No Deal Brexit the UK would automatically trade under WTO rules in which case the UK will have the ability to impose zero tariffs on imports including food and drink with a consequent reduction of prices of produce from non-EU countries. The media, most notably the BBC,Sky News and the FT invariably refer to maximum tariffs that can be imposed on imports under WTo rules without going on to refer to the zero option. | standish11
14/9/2018 11:45 | Tim Martin is an interesting character - I picked up a beer mat in my local Wetherspoons promoting a hard Brexit - 'headlined 'Free Trade (ie 'no deal') means lower prices'. Yet this morning BBC Radio 4 Today Prog. he was contemplating that his prices would have to rise on account of Brexit. I wonder whether he is going to re-print the beer mats this time with the truth, | maddox |
