Trouble is ITV is only charging £3.99 a month and can they really get away with charging much more ? Is the content really strong enough to warrant paying Netflix prices I wonder

Here’s the Netflix comment from BBC R4 earlier (now on BBC News website): She is embarking on a "strategic refresh", which includes upgrading ITV's online Hub service, and launching a Netflix-style streaming business. ITV is currently in talks with a number of parties regarding the latter, but did not indicate who they were. Ms McCall said its market research showed that viewers would pay for another subscription service, particularly if it has "distinctive and quality British content". "The market is clearly changing and to reflect this we have developed a clear vision and initiatives to drive growth to ensure ITV remains a structurally sound business," the company said.

Does anyone understand how the "pension surplus" of £86m becomes a deficit of £470m?? It matters because it's costing ITV £74 m cash every year! CD

That is actually quite good since at $6.99 a month that's an annual run rate of $42m shared by the joint venture. I have no idea what they are having to spend to support Britbox with marketing but the early success of this might just convince the BBC of the need to join forces with ITV on a single subscription based service at home.

@marksp2011 "In March 2017, we launched our US joint venture with the BBC Studios, BritBox, (with AMC Networks taking a minority share), an ad-free SVOD service offering the most comprehensive collection of British content in the US. A version of the service also launched in Canada in February 2018. Having exceeded 250,000 subscribers in less than a year from launch, the service is on track to double that number in its second year. Revenues from Britbox are not included in Direct to Consumer as it is accounted for as a joint venture."

I can't find it in their results but Carolyn McCall spoke on R4 about wanting to create their own Netflix, people will pay for another subscription service. This isn't just ITV Hub+, it will have exclusive content etc.

Divi increase was below consensus of 5% and margins looked weaker but you pay the costs now and get revenue for years so hard to tell if that matters so margins will always be variable in one accounting periodI would love to see a jv with bbc

Well, if we do have a potential bidder out there for ITV then these results and positive forward outlook might just be the catalyst to give them a kick up the backside before somebody else possibly jumps in ......

Good results. Glad to read and hear they are diversifying into other segments so revenues will hugely extend beyond advertising. Nice curve ball.

Studio margins down from 15.8% to 14.7% and guiding to anywhere between 14% and 16% through to 2021 on 5% CAGR growth so than could mean growth or almost no growth. I simply don't know.Big question you have to ask yourselves is what will the broadcast comps look like next year because there will be no World Cup and it's hard to see the audience figures getting any better. But well done ITV in the grand scheme of things they are holding in there just fine

Great results, Carolyn McCall sounded very confident on Radio 4 just now. They want to start their own Netflix.

Telegraph market report.. "...ITV edged down 0.3p to 170.5p despite JP Morgan predicting that the wave of deal making in the US media sector would spread to Europe. After a deluge of bids in America, involving media mammoths Disney, Fox, AT&T and Time Warner, the Wall Street bank argued that ITV was the best European candidate to be swept up in the next spate of deals. "The broadcaster’s own content and the fact that it “operates in an English language market” makes it an attractive takeover target for both US and European media companies, its analysts told clients." https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/07/24/market-reportsuperdry-takes-tumble-co-founder-sells-71m-stake/

As in ... manipulation manipulation noun [ C or U ] (INFLUENCE) mainly disapproving controlling someone or something to your own advantage, often unfairly or dishonestly: They have been accused of fraud and stock market manipulations. There's been so much media manipulation of the facts that nobody knows the truth of the matter. The country's opposition party claims the president returned to power through political manipulation. With thanks to the Cambridge dictionary :-)

Thanks Nige Co...jpm and a few others have cheered me up somewhat although one is always a bit concerned over adverse reaction to positives by some doubters or manipulators!! We can only wait and see how the markets respond tomorrow, but expect some volatility before see some stability, or hopefully confidence in the share price reaction over coming weeks.
