I wonder if the strength today is in any way a reaction to the market also noticing yesterdays buyback shares were cancelled not held...

Perhaps this was unexpected.

Apple TV+ has high-quality shows. It just does not have enough of them, they need scale. Is it not still a matter of debate as to why Apple are even involved in the streaming wars - have they ever elucidated what they aim to achieve with their involvement?

Can ITV open a themepark to compete with the new universal studios being built in the UK? They can use all their own IP for theming.

Discount for share holders too.

Yes and no.
Kantar’s data shows that despite AppleTV+ being the clear winner in the share of new subscribers in Q4’23. AppleTV+ success in the last quarter of 2023, is a combination of a winning strategy of free trials powered by the success of British shows Slow Horses & Ted Lasso to attract new viewers. AppleTV+ performed particularly strong in GB, taking the number one spot for new paid subscription share, and were in the top five across share of new SVOD subscribers in all other markets, with Germany being the only exception.

This trend is particularly evident in the US, GB, and Spain, underscoring Apple TV+’s increasing presence in the VoD landscape.
Despite this, persistently high churn rates will present challenges for Apple TV+ throughout 2024, with 13% of current subscribers already planning to cancel in the next quarter. Only 6.7 out of 10 new subscribers envision a long-term commitment to the service, with current subscriber sentiment leaning towards short-term consumption.

They will cancel all the treasury shares.
Stan you miss the point on the studios business. They wouldn’t be buying ITV’s output , they would be using it for their own productions. Anyway , very unlikely anyway imho , and zero chance down here.

Matt, I agree - as i posted earlier the key elements for Apple would be a) sell broadcast division eg to a European broadcaster wishing to expand, b) merge ITV Studios division with Apple Studios, c) rebrand all content streaming and future hardware offerings with iTV.

All perfectly reasonable and possible strategic actions, however unlikely.

I partially agree with you Marks. Yes they would have zero interest in a public sector broadcaster. But they would have interest in the studios business and , as discussed , the branding “iTV.”

Important!!!

Whilst updating my buyback statistics today with the latest 16/09 RNS - i was puzzled that the 13/09 RNS said this:

"Following the above transaction, the Company holds 120,479,277 of its ordinary shares in treasury and has 3,931,929,917 ordinary shares in issue (excluding treasury shares)."

And the 16/09 RNS said this:

"Following the above transaction, the Company holds 120,479,277 of its ordinary shares in treasury and has 3,931,608,894 ordinary shares in issue (excluding treasury shares)."

So the 'ordinary shares in issue' went down as usual (by the total of daily purchases which was 321,023 - but the amount held in Treasury did NOT.)

I thought this was simply a mistake in the RNS until I read it carefully and there is an important change that I don't think anyone has noticed yet!

13/09 RNS:

"ITV intends to hold the purchased shares in treasury."

16/09 RNS:

"ITV intends to cancel the purchased shares."

Yes that's right - yesterday the buyback shares were cancelled, not held in Treasury. This may be a one off on 16/09 - but if it is actually a change in direction now we have 120m already in Treasury - it could potentially mean the remaining £136m will be used to CANCEL shares.

We should know with the next RNS whether this is the new approach.

Interesting!

Itv is miles away from Apples business model. If ITV had split studios and catalogue v broadcast and advertising it would have been snaffled up years ago.The chances of Apple deciding to buy a public service broadcaster and declining ad business is nil.
