22/2/2016 19:51 | "We should not be trying to enforce democracy on others" -entirely in agreement. "I have no real love for Russia but...." - whatever the US has done under no circumstances justifies Russia's invasions of Georgia & Ukraine and bombing of Syria during the past 7 years. Two wrongs do not make it right. | firtashia | |
22/2/2016 15:25 | cobaltsky If you get your way and Turkey is alienated from the EU and removed from NATO, what do you think will happen? Firstly, Turkey will open the floodgates for over 3 million refugees to be happily given 'assisted' passage into the EU. Think about that. Secondly, exiting NATO will close many NATO bases in the region, especially the giant US base at Incirlik, and allow Turkey to make other alliances which would be very uncomfortable for the West. Turkey could also 'close' the Bosphorus, especially to Russian vessels, creating an incredibly dangerous situation right on the EU's doorstep. That doesn't bear thinking about. Turkey is not just an 'interested' party, looking for influence and financial gain from a distance, they are right in the thick of it and of immense importance in the region, being the only country where Europe and Asia meet. Turkey is a highly developed industrial state in it's western parts and a third world melting pot of different highly active factions in it's east. Turkey is fundamentally a very critical part of the world. | bahtat |
