06/9/2017 13:56 | Incidentally it looks like I was right about the shorts thing. From FCA handbook. A net short position is "the situation in which a firm has contracted to sell more of an investment than it holds or will hold". So, MW are currently short 13.8m more shares than they own (if they own any, which I doubt). | hammerd2
06/9/2017 13:53 | Pretty much everything is sold for more than it costs to make and the price is what the customer is willing to pay for the experience they perceive they will get from buying it. It's a little thing I like to call capitalism :-) If I were your wife I'd be more concerned about you chasing gangs of twins around bars. | hammerd2
06/9/2017 13:51 | but not away from it eh Richard fnarr fnarr I also like a glass of red , usually an expensive claret Drunk from a crystal glass while sitting in my extensive library lined with leather Classic volumes and smelling of rich mahogany | thereptile
06/9/2017 13:38 | I guess much depends on how much use you get from the phone/gadget etc, who pays £1000 for a Naim Mu So over a £500 B&W Zeppelin or a £30 bottle of wine over a blue Nun? ;) If you can afford it and the features/ sound quality / taste of the more expensive version is more to your liking then why not. Also like most cars now, much of this is put on the "tick" so the monthly rentals seem insignificant to the "masses". We each have our things that we will pay more for I guess is the answer. Back to your analogy I'd also go with the more casual girl with trainers, not least because she'll still be pain free and able to walk to the bed by the end of the night ;) | richardc77

06/9/2017 13:29 | Apple is a classic case of branding over reality. In what 'normal' market would people fight to be seen with a £1100 gadget that costs £125 to make? My wife was appalled when I told her if I saw a pair of female twins sat at the bar, I'd probably fancy the girl wearing trainers more than the one wearing Jimmy Choos. Because to me, Jimmy Choos are a pointlessly expensive extravagance, 90% hype/advertising and 10% substance. | luxaeterna1
06/9/2017 13:24 | Blue Nun ? You were lucky. In my day we had to make do with black and white nun... | hammerd2
06/9/2017 13:22 | Hard to beat a nice bottle of blue nun, straight from the bottle, saves the washing up. | twatcher
06/9/2017 13:21 | Will be interesting to see how many iPhone X, Edition, Pro they sell vs the usual upgraded 7s/8 (whatever they decide to call them all). Price of the two (with same storage) is reported to be circa £300-400. Availability said to be massively constrained during 2017 for the "premium" phone so that should make sure demand outstrips any price issues. What % would be put off buying the Pro in 256gb form for £1100? Personally wouldn't bother me but will be interesting to see the split after the first year. | richardc77

06/9/2017 13:16 | Just out ..... IC view on things Tip Update: Sell at 146p Timescale LONG TERM Our previous tip We said BUY at 22p on 22 Jun 2015 Tip performance to date +564% By Alex Newman Consider the following investor quiz question: a high-growth technology company in your portfolio has just posted a 2 per cent decline in adjusted operating profit, a 10 per cent drop in half-year cash generation, and an 18 per cent increase in leverage. Its chief executive maintains the company is poised to prosper from an industry inflection point, and that the outlook “has never looked better”. Do you a) sell out, or b) increase your stake? IQE:LSE 1mth Today change 4.42% Price (GBP) 153.50 When IQE (IQE) published its half-year numbers, the market initially gave the first answer. Perhaps fearful that demand for the semiconductor supplier’s much vaunted VCSEL (vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser) wafers was slower than expected, or that interim figures were only given a gloss by the post-referendum devaluation of sterling, investors ran for the exit. The stock, up threefold already in 2017, duly fell 10 per cent. By the end of the day's trading session, investors had scratched out their original response and doubled down, pushing the stock 6 per cent higher on chief executive Drew Nelson’s assertion that capacity, demand, revenue diversity and growth will all rocket in 2018. Peel Hunt chimed in, flagging another possible upgrade to earnings forecasts, although its analysts still expect full-year adjusted pre-tax profit of £23m and EPS of 3.3p this year, against £20.6m and 3p in 2016. IQE (IQE) IC View Analyst upgrades aren’t the only source of momentum for the shares. Despite the group’s sky-high valuation, investors were sufficiently inspired by these numbers to push IQE stock higher. That suggests there could be more to run, although we’ve got few qualms about closing out our spectacularly-timed original call (22p, 25 Jun 2015). We choose option a) Sell. 06/9/2017 13:08 | Sorry to get, sort of, back on topic briefly, but if you look at the FCA website re shorting, positions are called "net short positions". I had always assumed they were just short positions, so if you held 1m shares and shorted 1.5m shares you would be "shorting" 1.5m shares. Calling it a "net" short position implies that in the same scenario you would actually be "shorting" only 0.5m shares. Logically of course it makes sense to be like this as you are only "short" of the number of shares you are shorting minus the shares you own "long". Is so, then the current pair of likely lads (and ladies, but I confidently predict most of them are boys) could well have long positions too but their total short position would then be whatever the hold long PLUS their 1.54% and 2.01% so they're not really hedging anything at all. Which makes me even happier to see their current situation. Right, back to business as usual. I love a glass of red..... | hammerd2

06/9/2017 12:50 | Watch the iPhone 8 sales rocket as I believe many apple enthusiasts still have the iPhone 6 and are waiting for a proper substantial change to it rather than the slightly upgraded and cosmetic features of the iPhone 7. Just my hunch but I am betting I am right. | pyglet
06/9/2017 12:47 | I think the post of selling a few at 155 has caused a few PIs to follow suit unfortunately. But hey good luck to all. 155 will seem low in 12 months! | pyglet
06/9/2017 12:43 | I tend to drink ales during the day (we live within walking distance of 5 country pubs serving Wye Valley beers ;)) and red wine at night, whilst the wife sticks to white. However on the rare occasion we have a hot summer I like to dabble into some French whites or a nice Claire Valley Reisling :) This summer has been a wash out where we live, summer was over by 1st week of July. | richardc77
06/9/2017 12:31 | Ahh! I understand you now Richard. Yes that would probably work and depends a lot on the grape. I was imagining a decanter sat on the table for 24 hours (two decanters per person surely!). I tend to be a white wine drinker (Alsace, German, South African), but love a dabble onto the red Bordeaux and the Syrahs of the world. | luxaeterna1

06/9/2017 12:17 | Luxaeterna, I am saying I always open my wine in the morning (and put the stopper back on) and imo it stays optimum through to the next day but I normally finish the bottle in one sitting. I consume a lot of vin rouge, and have a 300 bottle cellar so speak from my own experience. If you find different, then that's fine just your opinion vs mine, each to their own as they say, I always let my taste buds lead me :) (I mostly drink Bordeaux) | richardc77
06/9/2017 12:08 | Are you suggesting red wine should be decanted for 24 hours? Most reds will require no longer than 30-90 minutes, except the really heavy full-bodied tannic wines. For the older classic reds (10 to 15+ years) I would probably just put it in the decanter and wait 30 minutes maximum. Otherwise the aromas tend to drop off and the flavour edges away. | luxaeterna1
