Obviously, you need to pick the right biotech, any old rubbish just won't do. Try OXB, PTI to name but two.

E,

Yes, people are clever enough to develop alternatives. That is not the problem. What they cannot do is develop sufficient alternatives in time to support a global population of 6 billion. It is the shift to a more viable population and the ensuing chaos which may throw us back to the stone age. Here's a less alarming website you may find of interest.

repossession=
"reverse loan transaction"

as in:

The Smiths had reached the point where they wanted to enjoy the benefits of renting, and so entered into a Reverse Loan Transaction. Mr. Smith was chuffed about the change, saying: "Owning was costing me a bundle each month. After we went along to the bank to organise a RLT, we moved and found ourselves paying 30% less per month for the same quality of accomodation." Although he suffered a loss of equity in his former home, he said he expected to make it back from the monthly savings within 2 1/2 years. He has also stopped worrying about falls in the value of his home, and sleeps better at night.

Then again alternative energies look more palatable when the car won't go ;-0

People are clever enough,
to find inventions to forestall another stone age.
But the days of cheap oil, and wasteful energy usage may be numbered

E,

I agree, this peak oil stuff does not wash. Too many shale deposits for starters.

Shell exec said last year that peak not for at least another 30 years at present usage/current fields. Not in his interest (or Shell) to say that.......

The peak talk does remind me of good old fashion ramping, lots of speccy money in oil these days. Refinery capacity is a different matter though.......

Alot of upward action in Oil this year.
But Gold has not proven itself yet

That article is OVERLY DRAMATIC:
"The long term ramifications of Peak Oil on our way of life are nothing short of mind blowing. As we slide down the downslope slope of the global oil production curve, we may find ourselves slipping into what some scientists are calling a "post-industrial stone age."

For those that think it will be a buying opportunity: think again.

Fickena, here's what a quick foray into Pharmagene has turned up; I've kept it as concise as possible. By all means exclude it from the header if it's too early-stage.

Pharmagene [PGN]

Web page:

Development strategy: to achieve early-stage licensing and development partners for their therapeutic candidates. Discussions are underway for their four leading compounds.

2005

R1 for irritable bowel syndrome: entered Phase I in January 2005
R4 for migraine: to enter Phase I
R65 for women's health, glaucoma and immunology: to enter pre-clinical trials
R99 for inflammatory/immune disorders: pre-clinical candidate to be selected

Pharmagene also has a drug discovery services division that is generating revenues. The share price is currently (end of January 2005) trading around cash level.

I see that there are reports that China is now prepared to let the Yuan float freely after US talk of reimposing trade sanctions. Good news.

Yes S and I find it difficult to understand why the US and UK economies haven,t imploded already. Nowadays they seem to be able to defy gravity by continuing to run with large trade deficits for a very long time. The danger of this is, I feel, that when the correction does eventually come (one year? ten years? who knows)it is likely to be more severe? Only if the USD and related currencies drop against the low cost Asian ones can there be a soft landing towards a trading balance imho.
